Hemodialysis Registered Nurse – East Houston Medical Center

Location: East Houston Medical Center – East Houston / Channelview–Baytown Corridor, TX
Schedule: Full-time, bedside hemodialysis with rotating call coverage

East Houston Medical Center is a growing, community-focused acute care hospital serving the East Houston, Channelview, and Baytown corridor with a commitment to safe, compassionate, and evidence-based care. We are seeking an elite Hemodialysis Registered Nurse to join our expanding nephrology service line and provide exceptional care to patients with acute and chronic kidney disease in our inpatient hemodialysis program.

    Position overview

The Hemodialysis RN is a key clinical expert responsible for managing the full dialysis treatment process from preparation and initiation through monitoring, discontinuation, and post-treatment evaluation. This nurse collaborates closely with nephrologists, hospitalists, and the interdisciplinary team to deliver safe, high-quality dialysis care that aligns with state and federal standards for end stage renal disease (ESRD) services.

    Key responsibilities

    • Perform comprehensive pre-, intra-, and post-dialysis assessments, including review of history, labs, fluid status, vital signs, and vascular access.
    • Safely initiate, monitor, and terminate hemodialysis treatments according to prescribed orders, established protocols, and equipment safety standards.
    • Operate, troubleshoot, and oversee dialysis machines, water systems, and related equipment; verify alarm checks and safety parameters prior to treatment.
    • Administer ordered medications and blood products during treatment, monitoring for and responding promptly to adverse reactions or clinical changes.
    • Develop, implement, and update individualized nursing care plans that reflect patient goals, nephrology orders, and evolving clinical status.
    • Provide expert patient and family education on kidney disease, dialysis treatments, medications, diet, fluid management, and home self-care strategies.
    • Collaborate with nephrologists, hospitalists, case management, social work, nutrition, and transplant centers to ensure coordinated, patient-centered care.
    • Maintain meticulous documentation of assessments, treatments, machine parameters, interventions, and patient response in the electronic health record.
    • Uphold infection prevention and safety standards, including vascular access care, environmental cleanliness, and equipment disinfection in accordance with regulatory requirements.

    Call expectations

    • Participate in a shared hemodialysis on-call rotation to support emergency and after-hours inpatient dialysis needs.
    • Remain reachable and able to arrive on-site within an agreed-upon timeframe when called for urgent hemodialysis treatments.
    • Collaborate with the House Supervisor and nephrology team to prioritize emergent and non-emergent dialysis cases during call.
    • Maintain readiness to manage clinically complex, time-sensitive dialysis situations in a calm and organized manner.

    What we offer

    ·     Competitive compensation with additional call pay for on-call shifts and call-back hours.

    ·     Comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, retirement options, and paid time off.

    ·     Supportive leadership, collaborative physician partners, and a culture that values professional excellence, integrity, and teamwork.

    Requirements

    Qualifications

    • Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Texas.
    • Minimum of 12 months of recent clinical RN experience in acute care or specialty setting.
    • At least 6 months of recent hemodialysis experience in an acute or chronic dialysis environment, or nationally recognized nephrology/hemodialysis certification in lieu of experience as permitted by regulation.
    • Current BLS certification required; ACLS strongly preferred.
    • Demonstrated proficiency with dialysis equipment, venous access management, and emergency response within the dialysis setting.
    • Exceptional communication, critical thinking, and clinical judgment skills, with a calm, patient-centered approach in high-acuity situations.
