Job Summary and Qualifications

The Histology Coordinator will perform all things in Histology:

  • Assessing specimens and prioritizing accordingly
  • Accessioning specimens
  • Preparing specimens for send out for grossing
  • Processing specimens and determining appropriate timing for processing
  • Cutting, staining and coverslipping H&E’s
  • Preparing and processing non-gyn cytology specimens including blocks when applicable
  • Cutting, staining IHC’s and special stains
  • Troubleshooting quality control and stain quality
  • Performing appropriate studies on new antibodies and stains
  • Assisting in FNA’s, EBUS, frozen, donor specimens, bone marrows, etc. as needed
  • Performing all maintenance and documentation as needed
  • Organizing all paperwork and documentation

In addition to the daily needs, this person will be responsible for all regulatory requirements for histology and cytology. They will also be working closely with the pathologists and the pathology office staff and assist as needed with pathology send outs.

You Should Have:  

  • High School Diploma AND minimum two years of histology experience  
  • OR High School Diploma AND completion of an accredited program in Histotechnology 
  • OR Associate’s degree in Chemistry, Biology AND one year of histology experience  
  • OR Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Biomedical Science, Biology or Chemistry  
  • National Certification as a MT (ASCP) or HT (ASCP)required  
  • Ability to consistently prepare and produce specimen sections with appropriate slide orientation, thickness, and stain quality for microscopic diagnosis by a pathologist 
  • Demonstrates good technique in the cutting, embedding, orientation and staining of specimens  
  • General knowledge of laboratory accreditation and regulatory compliance requirements 
  • Excellent communication, teamwork and organizational skills. Sets a positive example. 
  • Ability to train others 
  • Effective and proactive problem solving and decision-making skills 
  • Thorough knowledge of histology methods and correlation to disease processes  

  • Ability to follow protocols for the proper fixation and routine staining of samples
