Must be familiar with all aspects of the histology lab including embedding, cutting cover slipping, staining, grossing, tissue processing, decalcification, special stains, and cytology. Must understand all procedures of the department, theories, and policies. Also must be able to troubleshoot instruments and equipment, be familiar with billing, procedures, ordering of supplies, computer activities, and procedures for materials sent out for consultations. Population served: Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric. Performs other duties as assigned or necessary.
1. preparation of cytology specimens. Performs special stains.
2. Assists pathologists or clinician with bone marrows, frozen sections, fine needle aspirations, and autopsies as needed.
3. Maintains all solutions. Accurately prepares and labels solutions and reagents according to standard formulas, written method procedures, and complies with expiration dates.
4. Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and assures proper equipment functions before use.
5. Receives specimens from the operating room, signs for the tissue, maintains a log book, and assist the pathologist grossing in the specimens. Responsible for storage and discarding specimens in 45 days.
6. Performs all related pathology computer activities. Also makes pathology charges, manually and in the computer.
7. Responsible for timely decalcification procedures which involves determining end point.
8. Performs all quality control and equipment preventative maintenance recording them properly.
9. Performs inventory counts and orders supplies as needed without running out.
10. Assists in troubleshooting and properly records corrective actions/preventive actions.
11. Files and stores slides and paraffin blocks for accurately, easy retrievability, and proper storage times.
12. Assists in training other employees in the histology area.
13. Maintains neat, legible and organized records.
14. Follows oral and written instructions independently
15. Ability to problem-solve, and seek assistance from team members when necessary.
16. Reflects HCA values and it ethical and compliance principles in his/her daily activities (Code of Conduct).
