JOB SUMMARY

The Mohs Histology Technician provides technical expertise in the preparation, processing, sectioning, and staining of fresh tissue specimens during Mohs micrographic surgery. This position works closely with Mohs surgeons and clinical staff to ensure the timely and accurate preparation of high-quality frozen sections for microscopic examination and evaluation of surgical margins.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Receives, identifies, and processes fresh tissue specimens obtained during Mohs micrographic surgery.

• Performs tissue orientation, embedding, freezing, and cryostat sectioning to prepare high-quality frozen tissue sections for microscopic evaluation.

• Operates and maintains cryostats and other laboratory equipment in accordance with established protocols and manufacturer guidelines.

• Performs routine Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining and other specialized staining procedures as required.

• Ensures proper tissue orientation and preparation to facilitate accurate evaluation of peripheral and deep surgical margins.

• Produces consistent, high-quality frozen sections while maintaining efficiency in a fast-paced surgical environment.

• Performs quality control procedures to ensure tissue sections meet established standards for thickness, staining, and overall slide quality.

• Labels, documents, and tracks specimens throughout the Mohs surgical process to ensure accurate patient and specimen identification.

• Collaborates directly with Mohs surgeons to address tissue preparation needs, troubleshoot technical issues, and support efficient surgical workflow.

• Prepares and maintains laboratory reagents, stains, and solutions in accordance with established procedures.

• Performs routine maintenance, cleaning, and troubleshooting of cryostats and other laboratory equipment.

• Maintains adequate inventory of laboratory supplies and communicates replenishment needs.

• Adheres to all laboratory safety protocols, infection control procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.

• Maintains a clean, organized, and safe working environment, including appropriate disposal of biohazardous and chemically hazardous materials.

Marginal or Periodic Functions:

• Assists with laboratory documentation, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance activities.

• Supports workflow improvements to enhance laboratory efficiency and specimen turnaround times.

• Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

Assist the individual in successfully performing the role.

• Strong knowledge of Mohs micrographic surgery laboratory procedures and frozen section histology.

• Proficiency in cryostat operation, tissue embedding, frozen section microtomy, and H&E staining.

• Understanding of tissue orientation and margin assessment requirements specific to Mohs surgery.

• Ability to consistently produce high-quality frozen sections with minimal artifacts.

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

• Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills related to tissue processing, sectioning, and staining.

• Ability to work independently in a fast-paced surgical environment while maintaining accuracy and quality.

• Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate closely with Mohs surgeons and clinical staff.

• Ability to handle and safeguard confidential patient information.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent.

• Previous hands-on experience in histology, including frozen section preparation and cryostat operation.

• Demonstrated proficiency in tissue embedding, microtomy, and H&E staining.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Associate's degree in Histotechnology, Laboratory Science, or a related field.

• Previous experience working as a Mohs Histology Technician in a dermatology or Mohs surgery practice.

• Experience independently managing Mohs laboratory workflow.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS OR CERTIFICATIONS

Required:

• Any applicable state licensure or certification required for the position.

Preferred:

• Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/EQUIPMENT

• Mohs surgery laboratory within a dermatology practice, outpatient surgical center, or clinical setting.

• Standard histology laboratory equipment, including cryostats, microscopes, staining equipment, and tissue preparation instruments.

• Frequent handling of fresh human tissue specimens, laboratory reagents, and chemicals.

• Extended periods of standing and performing precise, repetitive laboratory procedures.

• Adherence to established laboratory safety standards, infection control protocols, and personal protective equipment requirements.
