Histotechnologist

The Histology Lab at UPMC Western Maryland is looking for a Histotechnologist! This role will consist of embedding tissue, microtomy, cytology preparation, IHC and special staining, and grossing tissues. This is a full-time position that will work daylight, Monday through Friday. No weekends or holidays! Start times will rotate from 5:00 am, 5:30 am, 6:00 am, 7:00 am, and 8:00 am.

You may qualify for a generous sign on bonus! Experienced techs may qualify for a sign on bonus of $20,000 with a two-year commitment, and new graduates may qualify for $15,000 with a two-year commitment. An additional $10,000 will be paid after three years!

Process and prepare specialized tissue samples per competency guidelines for this level in a clinical laboratory. In addition, monitor level and quality of work performed by others. Evaluate new procedures, techniques and tools. Resolve problems that impact test results.

Responsibilities:

• Demonstrates progression of skils towards working independently in an advanced staining area.
• Supports academic mission of department.
• Demonstrate complete knowledge of CoPath related to Histology workflow.
• Maintain instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols.
• Perform ancillary or miscellaneous tasks such as filing, cleaning, stocking supplies.
• Perform QC checks at each phase of processing/ staining
• Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label in order to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.
• Process and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and coverslipping. Embed and cut specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols.
• Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts or floaters.
• Successful completion of bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry.
• One year of clinical histology laboratory experience post training if not a graduate of accredited training program required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

• American Society Clinical Pathology Histotechnologist- HTL (ASCP certification required within 12 months of hire.
