Position Overview
Seeking a detail-oriented Histology Technician to prepare tissue specimens for microscopic evaluation and diagnosis by pathologists. This role is responsible for the full range of histologic processing—including tissue fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy, routine and special staining, coverslipping, and equipment maintenance. Candidates with less than one (1) year of experience, including recent graduates from accredited histology programs, are encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive, verify, and accession surgical and clinical tissue specimens within Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Hospital Information Systems (HIS).
- Operate and maintain tissue processors, ensuring proper dehydration, clearing, and infiltration cycles.
- Embed processed tissue specimens with proper orientation in paraffin blocks.
- Perform high-quality microtomy using automated microtomes and tissue flotation baths to produce uniform, wrinkle-free paraffin sections.
- Prepare frozen sections using a cryostat for rapid intraoperative consultations.
- Execute routine (H&E) and special staining protocols using automated stainers; apply automated coverslippers for final slide preparation.
- Operate laboratory microwaves, analytical balances, volumetric glassware, and solvent/alcohol recyclers according to standard chemical hygiene protocols.
- Maintain equipment performance logs, perform routine cleaning and preventive maintenance, and troubleshoot instrumentation issues.
- Follow strict laboratory safety protocols, biohazard handling standards, and quality control procedures.
Qualifications & Certifications
- Certification: Active registry/certification as a Histology Technician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent accrediting agency.
