Job Summary

SLCC Honors Program Peer Mentors assist and mentor students in navigating higher education by providing intentional and student-centered one-on-one and group mentorship support. Honors Peer Mentors support Honors Program students, particularly First-Year students, in transitioning to SLCC, adjusting to college life, and understanding Honors Program requirements, as well as checking in with students on their progress. Peer mentors also serve to foster a sense of belonging among the students, staff, faculty, and community. Plus, Peer Mentors assist in outreach efforts to prospective Honors Program students and assist in planning and promoting Honors Program activities and events.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities

The Honors Program Mentor will be responsible for:

  • Assisting Honors Program students in navigating higher education by providing intentional and student-centered one-on-one and group mentorship support
  • Supporting Honors Program students, particularly First-Year students, in understanding Honors Program requirements and checking in with students on their progress
  • Referring students to the appropriate campus and community resources
  • Providing general communication support i.e. Honors Program newsletter and social media for High-Impact Practice and Enrichment Experience opportunities on campus and in the community
  • Providing general office support for the Honors Lounge (opening and closing the lounge, including in-person office hours each week)
  • Assisting in planning and promoting Honors Program activities and events
  • Assisting in outreach efforts to prospective Honors Program students
  • Promoting a supportive environment and serve as a positive role model and representative of the SLCC Honors Program
  • Attending and participating in all trainings, staff meetings, events, workshops, orientations, and graduation

Minimum qualifications

  • Hight school diploma or equivalent

  • Registered for at least 9 credits for Fall and Spring semesters

  • Currently enrolled at SLCC as an undergraduate student

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current Honors Program student (apply to be an Honors student here: http://www.slcc.edu/honors/apply.aspx)
  • Demonstrate an ability to work with all groups of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff, and faculty, including those with disabilities
  • Be able to facilitate effective one-on-one and small group mentoring meetings
  • Demonstrate effective communication and listening skills, organization, teamwork, and a desire to learn and grow and develop as a peer mentor
  • Be able to participate in trainings, staff meetings, workshops
