Overview

The HVAC & HVAC Controls Technician is responsible for the installation, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and building automation/control systems. This role supports the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of HVAC systems across assigned facilities, with a strong emphasis on controls, energy efficiency, and occupant comfort.

Pay:  $42.87 an hour ​

The pay listed is the pay range for this position. Any specific offer will vary based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, skills, abilities, geographic location, and alignment with market data.​

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

HVAC Systems

  • Install, inspect, maintain, and repair HVAC equipment including boilers, chillers, air handling units, rooftop units, VAV systems, heat pumps, exhaust systems, and associated mechanical components.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance in accordance with manufacturer specifications and industry standards.
  • Diagnose system failures and performance issues using test instruments, schematics, and building documentation.
  • Respond to emergency service calls and after-hours issues as required.
  • Ensure HVAC systems operate in compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and safety standards.

HVAC Controls / Building Automation Systems (BAS)

  • Install, program, commission, troubleshoot, and maintain HVAC control systems (e.g., Johnson Controls, Siemens, Honeywell, Trane, or similar BAS platforms).
  • Calibrate sensors, actuators, valves, dampers, and control devices.
  • Modify control sequences and setpoints to optimize system performance, energy efficiency, and occupant comfort.
  • Monitor building systems via BAS interfaces and trend data to identify inefficiencies or faults.
  • Assist with system upgrades, retrofits, and integration of new control technologies.

General Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints, control drawings, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
  • Coordinate work with contractors, vendors, and other trades as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, including service reports and maintenance logs.
  • Support energy management initiatives and sustainability goals.
  • Follow all safety procedures, including lockout/tagout, PPE requirements, and OSHA standards.
  • Provide technical guidance to other maintenance staff as needed.

Qualifications

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of [X] years of experience in HVAC service and maintenance.
  • Demonstrated experience with HVAC control systems and BAS.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple tasks.

Preferred

  • EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification.
  • HVAC journeyman license or equivalent (where applicable).
  • Manufacturer‑specific controls training or certification.
  • Experience in institutional, educational, healthcare, or large commercial facilities.
  • Knowledge of energy management and building optimization practices.
 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of HVAC theory, controls logic, and mechanical systems.
  • Proficiency with electrical troubleshooting and low‑voltage control systems.
  • Ability to use diagnostic tools, meters, laptops, and BAS software.
  • Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills.
  • Effective communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, on ladders, and lift up to [X] lbs.
 

Work Environment

  • Work performed in mechanical rooms, rooftops, occupied buildings, and outdoor environments.
  • May require on‑call availability, nights, weekends, or emergency response.
  • Exposure to heat, cold, noise, and mechanical equipment.
