HVAC Design Technician

Position Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced HVAC Design Technician to join their growing engineering team in Portland, Oregon. This contract-to-hire opportunity is ideal for a skilled mechanical designer with extensive experience designing HVAC systems for semiconductor, advanced manufacturing, or other high-tech facilities.
In this role, you'll take ownership of HVAC and mechanical system designs while collaborating closely with engineers, project managers, and multidisciplinary design teams. You'll contribute to projects from initial concept through construction documentation, ensuring designs meet project objectives, industry codes, and quality standards.
This position offers the opportunity to lead portions of complex projects, mentor junior designers, and work with cutting-edge technologies in a collaborative engineering environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop detailed HVAC and mechanical system designs for industrial and high-tech facilities.
- Create and coordinate project deliverables including:
- Construction drawings
- Revit models
- Mechanical details
- Sections
- Equipment layouts
- Flow diagrams
- P&IDs
- Design sketches
- Collaborate directly with engineers to:
- Define project goals
- Research applicable codes and standards
- Review system requirements
- Coordinate with clients and project stakeholders
- Lead design efforts for systems, building areas, or specific project scopes on larger projects.
- Coordinate mechanical designs with architectural, structural, electrical, and process disciplines.
- Conduct field surveys and verify existing site conditions.
- Participate in design reviews and mechanical coordination meetings.
- Review project specifications and ensure compliance throughout the design process.
- Identify and resolve design conflicts through multidisciplinary coordination.
- Review the work of junior designers and provide technical guidance and mentorship.
- Assist engineers with design calculations as needed.
- Review and process equipment submittals and shop drawings.
- Prepare labor estimates for assigned design tasks.
- Deliver accurate, high-quality work while meeting project schedules.
Required Qualifications
- Associate's degree in Computer Drafting & Design or a related technical field, or equivalent industry experience.
- Minimum 5 years of HVAC/mechanical design experience.
- Experience designing building mechanical systems for semiconductor, advanced manufacturing, or other high-tech facilities.
- Advanced proficiency with:
- Strong knowledge of HVAC system design and related mechanical systems.
- Experience performing model coordination using Navisworks.
- Thorough understanding of applicable mechanical codes and industry standards.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to independently review and verify design accuracy.
- Excellent communication and coordination skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting project deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting EPC or design-build projects.
- Experience producing construction documentation for large, complex facilities.
- Familiarity with multidisciplinary BIM coordination workflows.
- Ability to mentor junior designers and contribute to team development.
