WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:

2027 Summer Internship

Position Summary

The Revenue Cycle Summer Intern will gain hands-on exposure to the financial and operational processes that support skilled nursing and senior housing communities. Working alongside Revenue Cycle team members, the intern will learn how resident and payer information moves through the revenue cycle, from admission and payer verification through billing, collections, payment posting, accounts receivable management, and resolution of outstanding balances.

The internship combines practical departmental experience, data analysis, exposure to cross-functional operations, and a capstone project focused on solving a real Revenue Cycle business challenge. At the conclusion of the internship, the intern will present findings and recommendations to Revenue Cycle leadership.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Revenue Cycle Operations

  • Learn the primary components of the healthcare revenue cycle within skilled nursing and senior housing.
  • Gain exposure to Medicare, Medicaid, Medicare Advantage, managed care, commercial insurance, private pay, and other payer categories.
  • Assist with reviewing accounts receivable data, aging trends, payer balances, denials, billing issues, and collection activity.
  • Support analysis of billing and payment trends and identify opportunities for improved accuracy, efficiency, or cash flow.
  • Participate in selected Revenue Cycle meetings and operational reviews.
  • Observe workflows associated with payer verification, authorization, billing, collections, cash posting, denials, appeals, and account resolution.
  • Assist with data validation, reporting, documentation, and other Revenue Cycle projects.
  • Gain an understanding of how Revenue Cycle partners with community operations, admissions, clinical teams, finance, managed care, compliance, and other departments.
  • Maintain confidentiality and follow applicable company policies and healthcare privacy requirements.

Data & Business Analysis

The intern will have opportunities to:

  • Analyze operational and financial data using Microsoft Excel and other available reporting tools.
  • Identify trends and potential root causes affecting accounts receivable performance.
  • Organize and summarize data for leadership review.
  • Develop charts, dashboards, or other visual summaries of findings.
  • Translate financial and operational data into actionable business recommendations.
  • Learn how Revenue Cycle key performance indicators are used to monitor performance and identify areas requiring attention.

Summer Capstone Project

A key component of the internship will be completion of an individual or team-based Revenue Cycle capstone project.

The intern will work with a Revenue Cycle leader to define a specific business question, analyze relevant information, identify opportunities, and develop recommendations.

Potential Capstone Topics

Examples could include:

  • Accounts Receivable Aging Analysis: Identify trends within aged receivables and recommend opportunities to reduce outstanding balances.
  • Denial Prevention: Analyze common denial categories and identify potential upstream prevention opportunities.
  • Medicare Advantage / Managed Care: Review payer trends, authorization issues, payment variances, or operational challenges.
  • Cash Acceleration: Evaluate selected points in the revenue cycle that may affect billing or payment timeliness.
  • Private Pay Collections: Analyze trends and recommend strategies to improve early identification and resolution of balances.
  • Revenue Cycle Process Improvement: Map an existing workflow, identify inefficiencies or handoff risks, and recommend a future-state process.
  • Automation Opportunity Assessment: Identify repetitive Revenue Cycle activities that may be candidates for automation or process standardization.
  • Performance Dashboard: Develop or enhance a dashboard for monitoring selected Revenue Cycle KPIs.
  • Acquisition/Integration Readiness: Evaluate Revenue Cycle information or processes needed when onboarding newly acquired communities.

Capstone Deliverables

At the conclusion of the internship, the intern will:

  1. Define the business problem or opportunity.
  2. Document the current state and relevant workflow.
  3. Analyze applicable data.
  4. Identify key findings and root causes.
  5. Develop practical recommendations.
  6. Estimate the potential operational or financial impact where data supports doing so.
  7. Create an executive-level presentation summarizing the analysis.
  8. Present recommendations to Revenue Cycle leadership and respond to questions.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in Accounting, Finance, Healthcare Administration, Business Analytics, Business Administration, Economics, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • Interest in healthcare operations, finance, analytics, or Revenue Cycle Management.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to organize and interpret data.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • High level of professionalism and attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle confidential information appropriately.
  • Interest in learning how financial and operational decisions affect healthcare organizations.
