This entry-level field position focuses on performing safety and corrosion inspections on utility-owned gas meters at customer locations. You will conduct thorough visual inspections, document findings in line with regulatory standards, and support regulatory audits, all while representing the organization professionally inside customers homes. The role requires strong reliability, customer service skills, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to work independently in a fully field-based environment across the Brooklyn and Queens service territory.
ResponsibilitiesYou will contribute directly to a major safety initiative that protects the public by helping identify and prevent potential gas leaks and explosions, giving your work a clear and meaningful purpose. The role offers significant growth opportunities within a large, multi-year program in the NYC metro area, including a 5-year deployment initiative and a 36-month inspection program with recurring future cycles. High performers have clear paths to upward mobility and promotion into larger programs and more advanced roles. You will benefit from structured training, certification opportunities, and a defined probationary period that supports your development and recognizes your progress. The organization emphasizes professionalism, safety, and long-term career development, providing a stable environment for individuals seeking to build a consistent, field-based career.
Work EnvironmentThis is a 100% field-based position operating primarily within the Brooklyn and Queens utility service territory. Standard operations hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with additional Saturday shifts available at the supervisors request and at the contractors discretion. You will report to job sites in Queens or Brooklyn, typically driving a company vehicle, and receive your daily route via a handheld tablet. The role requires working outdoors in all weather conditions, walking several miles per day, climbing stairs and ladders, and spending most of the day on your feet. Tailboard meetings are held at warehouse locations in Queens or Brooklyn before field assignments. The organization provides a simple tool set and safety equipment, including a flashlight, gas detector, field binder for paperwork, ID badges, tools and tool belt, handheld tablet, flame-resistant shirts and pants, safety vest, and hard hat. The training environment includes a structured onboarding process: Day 1 focuses on OSHA and orientation with a company handbook; the rest of Week 1 involves classroom training with a set schedule, scenario-based learning, homework, and practice exams that must be completed on your own time. Week 2 includes certification testing with two exams and up to three attempts, followed by four days of job shadowing in the field for those who pass. Week 3 focuses on evaluating your ability to complete inspections independently using the provided tools; successful candidates work independently, while others may receive additional training or be released. The first 90 days serve as a probationary period, during which performance, reliability, homework completion, and overall competency are closely monitored. Professional communication with supervisors regarding attendance and sick time is expected throughout.
