    Instructional Advisor/Tutor

    Hiram College invites applications for Instructional Advisor/Tutor (multiple positions) to tutor and advise students in the Thrive Learning Center in a one-on-one setting and assist with academic instruction of course content. The instructional advisor may assist with other services of the Thrive Learning Center in a manner consistent with the College mission and the mission of the Thrive Learning Center.

    The Thrive Learning Center is a comprehensive fee-based support program for degree-seeking Hiram College students with learning differences and other diagnoses such as ADHD, anxiety, learning disabilities - dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, mental health diagnoses, Autistic Spectrum Disorders, and other neurodivergent conditions. Thrive began in 2005 as the Academic Support Center at Notre Dame College in South Euclid, OH, and moved to Hiram College for the Fall 2024 semester after Notre Dame College closed. In addition to legally mandated accommodations and practices, supports include unlimited academic tutoring from professional tutors, monitoring of academic progress, social and emotional support and opportunities, and career services.

    BASIC FUNCTION:

    The Instructional Advisor's main responsibility is to tutor and advise students in the Thrive Learning Center in a one-on-one setting and assist with academic instruction of course content. The instructional advisor may assist with other services of the Thrive Learning Center in a manner consistent with the College mission and the mission of the Thrive Learning Center.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Tutor students who are part of the Thrive Learning Center in coursework-specific content, including re- and pre-teaching, monitoring, advising, and instructing course material.
    • Follow course syllabi and utilize resources to aid in student learning.
    • Maintain positive supportive relationships with students.
    • Assist with the Testing Hub activities as needed (monitor and proctor student testing).
    • Ensure compliance with secure testing practices and student accommodations.
    • Communicate student progress and follow department procedures related to documentation of progress and needs.
    • Communicate accurate and timely information to the leadership team of the Thrive Learning Center.
    • Work cooperatively with staff, students, and parents who are a part of the Thrive community, and with Hiram College faculty and staff.
    • Adopt a learner and growth mindset.
    • Attend staff meetings, in-services, and other departmental activities.
    • Maintain confidentiality and privacy of student records and documentation per privacy laws relative to Hiram College and Thrive Learning Center services.
    • Ability to work in-person during the academic workday (9 AM - 4 PM) and academic year.
    • Perform all essential job functions accurately and in a timely fashion with minimal supervision.

    ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

    • Office work.
    • Light activity (occasional).
    • Communicate and interact with students, peers, parents, staff, and faculty.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor's degree required, post-bachelor's degree a plus.
    • Minimum of one year of experience in teaching, tutoring, coaching, advising, higher education, adult education, or related field.
    • Minimum beginner computer skills in software programs such as Microsoft products and other computer systems.
    • Proficiency in their designated subject/content area specialty (Executive Functioning, Math, English/Literature, Science, Education, Business, Nursing, Computer Science, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Environmental Studies, Humanities, Political Science, Management, Social Sciences, etc.); proficiency in more than one area preferred.
