TITLE: Instructional Assistant - Special Education

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Meets MSDE standards of Highly Qualified by possessing an Associate''s Degree, 48 college credits, or successful completion of state/local assessment
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff and parents (using appropriate grammar) in both oral or written form.
  • Ability to support students'' behavioral needs in a variety of school/program settings.
  • Ability to use a computer

REPORTS TO: School Manager, Principal, or Assistant Principal

JOB GOAL: The Special Education Instructional Assistant provides instructional, behavioral, and personal support to students with disabilities in both classroom and individual settings. Working under the direction of a certified special education teacher, the instructional assistant helps students achieve academic, social, emotional, and behavioral goals, while promoting independence and inclusion.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the teacher in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and instructional plans.
  • Provide one-on-one and small-group academic support.
  • Reinforce lessons and learning activities using teacher-directed instructional strategies.
  • Support students with assignments and assessments.
  • Assist students with daily living skills, including feeding, toileting, dressing, and mobility, when required.
  • Monitor and document student progress, behavior, and participation.
  • Implement positive behavior support strategies and behavior intervention plans.
  • Help maintain a safe, organized, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Supervise students during classroom transitions, lunch, recess, field trips, and other school activities.
  • Prepare instructional materials, classroom displays, and adaptive learning resources.
  • Operate classroom technology and assistive devices as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with school policies and applicable laws.
  • Communicate effectively with teachers, therapists, administrators, and other members of a student's team as directed by their case manager.
  • Attend staff meetings, professional development, and required training sessions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Non-exempt position. Ten month work year.

Salary to be established by the Board.
