Position

Renton Technical College is seeking an Instructional Support Tech to assist our Advanced Manufacturing Division. This position is responsible for providing instructional and classroom support services for academic and vocational programs. Responsibilities include assisting students with course work and hands-on assignments; assisting students in preparing materials and equipment for use in the shop, classroom and laboratory settings; setting up, maintaining, and cleaning of operating equipment in accordance with standardized procedures or instruction guidance; assist instructors in presenting course material including administering and scoring tests, and performing a variety of other instructional support duties.

The Instructional Support Tech is represented by the Renton Professional Technical Association (Prof-Tech) union. This is a full-time, classified, and overtime eligible position reporting to the Dean of Advanced Manufacturing. The pay range for this role is $59,125.83 - $78,485.73 annually. Salary placement is based on applicable experience. New hires may not be placed above step 10 ($74,456.31). Key Responsibilities / Essential Functions Include

  • Support the colleges mission by creating a learning and work environment of mutual respect and fairness, while encouraging creative and critical thinking. Foster a climate of multicultural understanding.
  • Support instructors by preparing laboratory equipment, maintaining tools and training equipment, troubleshooting laboratory issues, clean-up, and assisting students during hands-on activities.
  • Assist supervisor/instructor in classroom work, field trips, and lecture periods.
  • Help with vocational training activities and maintain the classroom environment while supervisor gives individual attention to students.
  • Assist in the preparation of materials for use in classrooms, laboratories or instructional shops; set up assignments, equipment or demonstration apparatus for classes; confer with instructor in establishing and developing assignments.
  • Receive materials and supplies used in classes; assist instructors in demonstration of tools, equipment, machinery, apparatus and materials.
  • Estimate quantity and quality of supplies and materials needed to orders for the course. Maintain stock levels of materials and support purchasing. Catalog equipment and supplies for easy acquisitions and orders.
  • Operate and perform routine maintenance and repairs on laboratory equipment. Coach students, teaching assistants and faculty in the use of equipment
  • Prepares equipment, materials, and solutions for classwork projects. Prepares demonstrations as requested by instructors.
  • Assist instructors with lecture and laboratory material by conducting laboratory or lecture demonstrations. Collaborate with the instructor in establishing and developing assignments.
  • Modify equipment, materials and programs as required for individual instructors; assist students and instructors in selecting correct tools and materials.
  • Provide instructional assistance for students in the development of learning skills such as reading, study skills and other instructional areas.
  • Administer standardized tests to students as directed by the instructor, score tests and record results for analysis.
  • Maintain records of work activities and prepare reports.
  • Attend and participate in periodic in-service training programs.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to support student learning.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively, both orally and in writing, with college employees, departments and outside agencies.
  • Perform other related projects and assignments as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience with persons from diverse backgrounds such as sexual orientation, racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, socio-economic, physical and learning abilities, and a commitment to an inclusive and equitable working / learning environment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent, with 3 years of experience with instructional support, advanced manufacturing or a related field. Associates degree is preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and hands-on experience with electrical systems required. Experience with HVAC/R systems, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to instruct students and provide training in the field of study is preferred.
  • Ability to design learning experiences that are interactive and respectful of cultural differences.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals whose first language is not English.
  • Ability to work effectively and engage with adult learners.
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically experience creating & editing documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Previous success learning new computer software programs/platforms required.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail required as well as previous experience maintaining accurate records, managing multiple tasks, and planning and organizing work in order to meet changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Have or acquire within 90 days of initial employment an industrial first aid certificate and an industrial safety and hygiene certificate preferred.
  • Ability to represent the college in a positive and professional manner, while using tact, discretion and courtesy.
  • Ability to speak a regionally top spoken language other than English preferred (Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian, Somali, and Chinese).

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Have or acquire within 90 days of initial employment an OSHA 10 certificate.
  • Have or acquire within 90 days of initial employment an EPA Section 608 certificate, Universal preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work hours for this position will be 11:00am - 8:00pm, Monday through Friday. The position is active in nature and requires lifting up to 50 lbs., standing, lecturing and demonstration of processes in a classroom environment. The job also requires some sedentary time when performing administrative program functions. Includes potential exposure to and management of hazardous chemicals as related to the automotive industry.

Dental Coverage

Renton Technical College provides dental coverage at no monthly premium cost to the employee. Benefit eligible employees have 3 dental plans to choose from. Options include:

Waiving Medical Coverage

If waiving medical coverage, the employee will still be covered under the dental and vision insurance plan at no monthly premium cost.

Flexible Spending Arrangement (FSA& LPFSA) & Dependent Care Assistance Program (DCAP)

The FSA, LFA and DCAP plans are offered by the College and the State of Washington. FSA is a PEBB sponsored benefit program that allows you to use pre-tax money in a calendar year to pay for certain out-of-pocket medical expenses and/or Childcare expenses.

An FSA can save you 25 - 40% on your eligible expenses. Both plans are offered as payroll deductions.

Annual contributions in 2026 for Flexible Spending Arrangements can be between a minimum of $120 to maximum of $3,400. As a "use it or lose it" IRC governed plan, medical expense reimbursements can be requested for employees, spouse, or their IRS eligible dependents.

Annual contributions in 2026 for the Limited Purpose Flexible Spending Arrangement can be between a minimum of $120 to maximum of $3,400. As a "use it or lose it" IRC governed plan, medical expense reimbursements can be requested for employee, spouse, or their IRS eligible dependents. Limited Purpose FSA is for employees enrolled in CDHP plans with HSA. Funds can only be used for dental and vision expenses only.

Dependent Care FSA (DCAP) allows you to save on child or elder care expenses. (e.g., babysitting, daycare, in-home care for an older dependent inept of self-care). Annual contribution is $7,500 for a Single person or Married couple filing a joint tax return. Contribution of $3,750 for each married participant filing separate tax returns.

Life-Insurance

Permanent employees, lawful spouse, qualified same-sex domestic partner and dependent children under 26 years of age are eligible to enroll in life Insurance. Coverage is effective first of the month following the date of employment for basic coverage; for optional coverage, amounts become effective the first of the month following approval date.

  • Basic Coverage: $35,000 Basic Term Life & $5,000 Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) This is employer provided at no cost to theemployee.
  • Supplemental Life Coverage(s): Supplemental term insurance coverage for employee, lawful spouse, qualified same-sex domestic partner and family is available in$10,000 increments from $10,000 up to $100,000, at additional cost to the employee.
  • Supplemental AD&D Coverage: Voluntary Accidental Death and Dismemberment for employee, lawful spouse, qualified same-sex domestic partner and family is available at additional cost to employee.

Life Insurance Evidence of Insurability may be required for certain supplemental coverage amounts.

Long-Term Disability (Two Plans offered)

  • Basic Plan: Employer provided and at no cost to the employee. It Provides 60% of the first $750 pre-disability monthly earnings, reduced by any deductible income. The maximum benefit $450 per month; the minimum benefit $100 per month. Benefits begin after 90 days of disability or the period of accumulated sick leave, whichever islonger.
  • 2 Optional Plans: 60% and 50% of pre-disability monthly earnings, reduced by any deductible income, and is available at additional cost to employee. Maximum benefit for 60% plan is $10,000 per month and $8,333 per month for the 50% plan. Premium for the optional plans is determined by employee type and waiting periodselected.

Retirement Options (Tax Deferred Retirement Plans)

PERS Plan 2: defined benefit plan for classified staff

  • Employee Contribution: 5.38% of gross salary

  • Employer Contribution: 5.58% of gross salary

PERS Plan 3: defined benefit & employee defined contribution for classified staff, Administrators, and Exempt employees.

  • Employee and Employer contributions to applicable retirement plans are mandatory for benefit eligible employees. The amount of the deduction and contribution are dependent upon the retirement plan chosen and may vary by current contribution rates in effect.

Supplemental Retirement & Deferred Compensation Plan

Supplemental Retirement Plan: In addition to regular matched retirement, employee can voluntarily participate in a 403(b) plan and set aside a portion of their income in Pre-Tax Elective Deferral or an After-Tax (Roth) Elective Deferral. Agreements and amounts can be changed at any time.

Deferred Compensation Plan: The State of Washington 457 plan permits employee to set aside additional pre-tax earnings for retirement savings. Certain tax regulations allow employees to participate in one or both supplemental 403(b) plans and State of Washingtons 457 deferred compensation plan.

Contributions to a 403(b) or 457 plan are funded solely by the employee.

Credit Classes (Reduced Classes)

Faculty employed at 50% or more and permanent classified, exempt, or administrative staff may take almost any credit class on a space-available basis if requirements and prerequisites have been met. To get the reduced tuition rate, the employee may not register until the date listed in the enrollment calendar (usually the third day of the quarter). Hourly and probationary employees are not eligible for this reduced tuition.

Auto and Home Insurance - Liberty Mutual

Leave

Employees accrue vacation (16.67 hours per month for exempt employees), sick (8 hours per month), and personal holiday based on their classification (8 hours per year for exempt employees). Represented employees should refer to their collective bargaining agreement for accrual rates and other leaves.

Paid Family Medical Leave (PFML):

This benefit offers partially paid leave to care for yourself or a loved one in times of serious illness or injury; to bond with a new child joining your home through birth, adoption or foster placement; and for certain military-connected events if you have a family member in active-duty service.

Under the PFML program, the Employment Security Department (ESD) will replace up to 90% of an eligible employee's typical weekly wage, up to the maximum, which is updated yearly.
