Position Description

The Full-Time Law Enforcement Training Instructor / Coordinator is responsible for providing high-quality instruction, student support, program development, and administrative leadership for the Law Enforcement Training programs and other North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and Sheriffs' Education and Training Standards Commission courses. The instructor delivers classroom, laboratory, scenario-based, and practical skills training while ensuring compliance with all applicable commission standards, college policies, and accreditation requirements. They will have some administrative duties assisting with coordinating the daily operations of the courses.

This position supports the mission of the college by preparing students and public safety professionals for successful careers in law enforcement and related criminal justice fields through effective instruction, curriculum development, advising, and community engagement.

Responsibilities and Duties (*Essential Functions)

  • Teaches and delivers criminal justice and public safety training programs, including certification, instructor training, and continuing education courses, in accordance with applicable state standards, regulatory requirements, and agency needs
  • Delivers instruction in traditional, hybrid, laboratory, skills-based, and scenario-driven learning environments
  • Prepares course materials, lesson plans, examinations, practical exercises, and assessments that support established learning outcomes
  • Utilizes a variety of instructional methods to promote student learning and engagement
  • Maintains a safe, inclusive, and professional learning environment
  • Evaluates student performance and provide timely feedback regarding academic progress and skill development
  • Maintains accurate attendance, grading, certification, and training records
  • Advises and mentors students regarding educational, certification, and career goals
  • Maintains all required instructor certifications and professional credentials
  • Remains current on law enforcement practices, legal updates, instructional technologies, and adult learning methodologies

Identifies and assists students who may require academic intervention or additional support

Teaches other commission-mandated and in-service law enforcement courses as assigned

Assists with planning, scheduling, coordinating, and evaluating programs

Develops and maintains administrative processes that improve operational efficiency and service delivery

Serves as a liaison among departments, stakeholders, regulatory agencies, and program participants

Participates in professional development activities as required by the college and state regulatory agencies

Serves on departmental, divisional, and college committees as assigned

Builds and maintains positive working relationships with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies

Represents the college at community events, advisory committee meetings, and public safety partnerships

Assists with firearms, defensive tactics, driving, detention, telecommunicator, detention officer, or other public safety training programs as qualified and assigned

Supports accreditation, compliance reviews, and commission audits

Provides requested reports, documentation, and data to supervisors in a timely manner

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Extensive knowledge of North Carolina criminal justice laws, procedures, and law enforcement practices.

Knowledge of Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and Sheriffs' Education and Training Standards Commission regulations.

Knowledge of adult learning principles and effective instructional practices

Ability to deliver classroom, practical skills, and scenario-based instruction

Ability to develop lesson plans, assessments, and instructional materials

Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills

Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism

Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students, colleagues, and public safety partners

Proficiency with learning management systems, Microsoft Office applications, and instructional technology

Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment

Demonstrates resourcefulness, initiative, enthusiasm, and a sincere interest in helping students reach their maximum potential

Requirements:

Associate degree from a regionally accredited institution

Current certification as a North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission General Instructor

Current North Carolina Instructor for General Instructor certification or ability to obtain within a designated timeframe

Ten (10) years of sworn law enforcement experience

Five (5) years of documented instruction of teaching BLET commission-certified criminal justice training courses

Valid Drivers license and approval required by the College's liability insurance carrier

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, or a related field

Fifteen (15) years of sworn law enforcement experience in multiple areas within a Law Enforcement organization to include but not limited to patrol, investigations, administration, and other specialties

Ten (10) years of documented instruction of teaching BLET commission-certified criminal justice training courses

Experience teaching in community college, academy, military, or public safety training environment

Current or previous certification in specialized instructional areas such as Firearms, Driver Training, Subject Control/Arrest Techniques, Physical Fitness, RADAR, Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, Instructor for General Instructor certification or other commission-recognized disciplines

Curriculum development experience

Experience using educational technology and learning management systems

Supervisory or command-level law enforcement experience
