Instrumentation, Controls and Electrical (IC&E) Technician

The Rosemary Power Station in Roanoke Rapids, NC, is a 160 MW combined-cycle facility featuring oil-fired combustion turbines and a steam turbine. The plant is designed to maximize energy output while supporting efficient, environmentally responsible operation. Rosemary provides reliable electricity during periods of peak demand, contributing to regional grid reliability while maintaining compliance with applicable emissions and environmental requirements.

Opportunity Summary

The Instrumentation, Controls & Electrical (IC&E) Technician maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, calibrates, and installs plant instrumentation, control systems, and electrical equipment to support safe and reliable operations at Rosemary Power Station. This position performs preventive, predictive, corrective, and emergency maintenance across electrical, instrumentation, PLC, and turbine control systems. The IC&E Technician also supports equipment upgrades, plant testing, contractor activities, and maintenance documentation.

Your scope of responsibility as IC&E Technician includes the following primary functions:

• Calibrate, test, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and install plant instrumentation, controls, and electrical equipment, including control valves, variable speed drives, motors, transmitters, analyzers, battery systems, inverters, chargers, and calibration equipment.
• Perform preventive, predictive, corrective, and emergency maintenance on electrical systems, including 13.8 kV and 4160-volt switchgear, motor control centers, transformers, motors, batteries, inverters, chargers, generators, and excitation equipment.
• Maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize Allen-Bradley PLC systems, including diagnosing faults, supporting program and logic improvements, and coordinating with engineering on control system performance.
• Support instrumentation and controls associated with combustion turbines, HRSGs, steam turbines, burner management systems, combustion controls, boiler controls, and related combined-cycle equipment.
• Install new equipment and system modifications and assist the Plant Engineer with plant testing, including turbine control, combustion control, and boiler/HRSG control system testing.
• Diagnose equipment and system problems, identify hazards and abnormal conditions, and recommend or implement repairs to improve safety, reliability, and equipment availability.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records, calibration data, equipment history, drawings, vendor information, and other technical documentation using SAP and plant recordkeeping systems.
• Coordinate maintenance activities with plant personnel and outside contractors, providing technical guidance and oversight during overhauls, repairs, and instrument and control-related work.
• Maintain tools, test equipment, and work areas in proper condition and handle hazardous materials and waste, including batteries and fluorescent bulbs, in accordance with applicable safety and environmental requirements.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the facility.

Working Relationships

The IC&E Technician reports directly to the O&M Supervisor, takes general direction from the Plant Manager, and coordinates with all other plant personnel.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds.

Power plant environment that may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions.

Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which can include hard hats, safety glasses, and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

The IC&E Technician works a standard Monday to Friday day shift schedule. This position will require extended hours, flexible shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed to support plant operations and business needs and may also require callout availability. Depending on the position, on-call status may or may not apply.

Compensation

This position offers a base pay rate ranging from $42.23 to $51.50 per hour, along with eligibility for an annual performance bonus.

Qualifications and Technical Competencies

• High school diploma or equivalent required; an associate degree in power plant technology, instrumentation, electrical technology, engineering, or a related technical field is preferred. Relevant industry or military experience may be considered in lieu of additional education.
• Prior IC&E, electrical, instrumentation, or controls technician experience in power generation or a similar industrial environment is preferred.
• Strong technical knowledge of industrial electrical systems and equipment, including 13.8 kV and 4160-volt switchgear, motors, motor control centers, transformers, batteries, inverters, chargers, generators, and excitation systems.
• Hands-on capability maintaining and troubleshooting instrumentation and control systems associated with combustion turbines, HRSGs, steam turbines, and other power generation equipment.
• Working knowledge of Allen-Bradley PLC systems, turbine controls, burner management systems, combustion controls, and boiler/HRSG control systems.
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, repair, calibrate, inspect, and perform preventive and predictive maintenance on electrical, instrumentation, and control equipment.
• Familiarity with machine condition monitoring and diagnostic tools used to assess equipment condition and support predictive maintenance activities.
• Proficiency in SAP or similar CMMS platforms and maintaining equipment records, calibration data, drawings, and other technical documentation.
• Effective analytical, mathematical, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate technical findings and recommendations.
• Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.
