Your impact

At Jacobs, we don't settle - always looking beyond to raise the bar and deliver with excellence. We apply our expertise and knowledge as we look toward the future with optimism and purpose. We don't settle until we've given our best and know we're making a difference.

Our Water team delivers innovative solutions that help communities provide safe, reliable, and sustainable water and wastewater services. We are seeking an Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineering Intern who is excited to learn, contribute, and gain hands-on experience supporting critical infrastructure projects that improve and protect the communities we serve.

As an intern, you'll work alongside experienced engineers on municipal and industrial water and wastewater treatment facilities, pump stations, pipelines, and related infrastructure projects. You'll gain exposure to the design and implementation of instrumentation, controls, and automation systems that help facilities operate safely, efficiently, and reliably. Through mentorship and real project experience, you'll develop technical skills while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams of engineers and designers.

What You'll Do

  • Assist with the development and modification of Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Support the specification and selection of process instrumentation, analyzers, control valves, and field devices.
  • Gain exposure to PLC- and SCADA-based control systems used in water and wastewater facilities.
  • Assist with control system architecture and industrial communication network designs.
  • Support the preparation of engineering calculations, technical reports, and design documentation.
  • Coordinate with process, mechanical, electrical, civil, and structural engineering teams.
  • Participate in design reviews, team meetings, and field investigations.
  • Assist with construction support, commissioning, and startup activities as needed.
  • Learn industry standards, engineering best practices, and quality processes.

This position is not eligible for employer-sponsored work authorization now or in the future. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire and maintain such authorization throughout their employment without employer sponsorship.

Here's what you'll need

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited university program and returning to school following the internship.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without the need for visa sponsorship, now or in the future

Ideally, you will also have

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and/or Revit.
  • Exposure to PLCs, SCADA systems, industrial automation, or process controls through coursework, projects, or previous internships.
  • Interest in municipal infrastructure, water treatment, wastewater treatment, and industrial process systems.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or plans to pursue EIT after graduation.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and adapt to new challenges.
  • Forward-thinking mindset with a desire to contribute innovative ideas.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.
