Our new, state-of-the-art Jacksonville – E-Town hospital is seeking a skilled, compassionate, and team-oriented Internal Medicine Veterinary Technician to join our growing Specialty & Emergency veterinary team!

AVS is committed to providing exceptional veterinary medicine while creating a workplace where team members feel valued, respected, supported, and empowered to grow professionally.

POSITION OVERVIEW

As an Internal Medicine Veterinary Technician at AVS, you will play an essential role in supporting our Internal Medicine service and providing exceptional care to patients with complex and challenging medical conditions.

Working directly alongside our Internal Medicine Specialist, fellow technicians, assistants, and other specialty teams, you will participate in advanced diagnostic procedures, specialized treatments, ongoing patient monitoring, and the management of complicated medical cases.

Internal Medicine is about looking deeper—asking questions, connecting the pieces, and helping uncover answers for patients and families who may have been searching for them for some time.

This is a highly collaborative position where clinical curiosity, communication, teamwork, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to patient care are essential.

We are looking for someone who brings strong technical skills, a genuine passion for veterinary medicine, and the desire to continually expand their knowledge while supporting those around them.

The ideal candidate will thrive in a specialty hospital environment, enjoy solving complex medical challenges, and take pride in being part of a team dedicated to exceptional patient care.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist our Internal Medicine Specialist with the diagnosis, treatment, and management of complex medical conditions.

  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments and provide advanced nursing care.

  • Assist with bone marrow procedures and other specialized diagnostic techniques.

  • Support feeding tube placement, maintenance, and patient management.

  • Perform IV catheter placement, venipuncture, and advanced laboratory sample collection.

  • Administer prescribed medications, fluid therapy, and other treatments under veterinarian direction.

  • Assist with blood transfusions, patient monitoring, and transfusion safety protocols.

  • Provide anesthesia and procedural sedation support, including patient monitoring and recovery.

  • Monitor hospitalized patients and recognize subtle changes in their medical condition.

  • Assist with the management of gastrointestinal, endocrine, respiratory, renal, hepatic, hematologic, and immune-mediated diseases.

Advanced Diagnostics & Technical Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients, equipment, and supplies for specialized diagnostic procedures.

  • Assist with diagnostic imaging, ultrasound procedures, and advanced laboratory testing.

  • Collect, process, and prepare diagnostic samples according to established protocols.

  • Maintain specialized Internal Medicine equipment and procedural areas.

  • Ensure accurate medical documentation, treatment records, and diagnostic reporting.

  • Support safe and efficient patient preparation, procedural assistance, and recovery.

  • Follow established hospital protocols for infection prevention, patient safety, and medical care.

Teamwork & Collaboration

  • Work closely with our Internal Medicine Specialist, fellow technicians, assistants, and other hospital departments to coordinate patient care.

  • Maintain clear, respectful, and effective communication throughout the diagnostic and treatment process.

  • Collaborate with Emergency, Critical Care, Surgery, Neurology, and other specialty services.

  • Participate in patient rounds, case discussions, and collaborative medical decision-making.

  • Support fellow team members during challenging cases and high-volume periods.

  • Help create an environment where questions are encouraged, ideas are welcomed, and everyone contributes to exceptional patient care.

Patient Advocacy & Client Experience

  • Advocate for patient comfort, safety, and compassionate care throughout the diagnostic and treatment process.

  • Recognize and communicate subtle changes in patient behavior, comfort, appetite, respiratory patterns, and overall condition.

  • Assist with client education, discharge instructions, medication guidance, and ongoing treatment recommendations as appropriate.

  • Support families navigating complex diagnoses and chronic medical conditions with empathy and professionalism.

  • Help ensure every patient and family receives thoughtful, individualized, and compassionate care.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • Previous experience as a Veterinary Technician, preferably in Internal Medicine, Emergency, Critical Care, Surgery, Anesthesia, or Specialty medicine.

  • Strong understanding of veterinary patient care, medical treatments, and diagnostic procedures.

  • Experience with venipuncture, IV catheter placement, laboratory sample collection, and hospitalized patient monitoring.

  • Knowledge of veterinary pharmacology, fluid therapy, anesthesia, and patient safety.

  • Interest in advanced diagnostics, complex medical conditions, and specialty procedures.

  • Ability to recognize subtle changes in patient condition and communicate concerns appropriately.

  • Strong communication, organizational, and critical-thinking skills.

  • A genuine passion for continued education, professional development, and teamwork.

Certified Veterinary Technicians (CVTs) are encouraged to apply; experienced veterinary technicians without certification will also be considered.

Previous Internal Medicine or specialty experience is highly desirable, but we also welcome motivated technicians with strong clinical foundations who are eager to advance their knowledge and technical capabilities.

We especially value individuals who are naturally curious, enjoy learning from complex cases, and are comfortable asking questions.
