Job Summary
The Internal Medicine technician or assistant is an integral part in ensuring a functioning and efficient service to clients and their pets. They will assist the Internist in starting appointments, discharging patients, providing exceptional nursing care to patients, maintaining paperwork, client education, and having exceptional client communication skills to maintain relationships with families who are coping with their pet’s chronic illnesses.
Essential Job Functions
Regular duties include client communication and education; taking patient histories; in-patient nursing care, monitoring and treatments; medication calculations and administration; venipuncture; IV catheter placement; digital radiography and more.
- Assist our Internal Medicine doctors and other team members
- Restrain animals safely using stress-free handling techniques
- Work collaboratively and positively with all coworkers
- Enter medical record notes and ensure that information in medical record is accurate and up to date in a timely fashion
- Provide nursing care to hospitalized patients and medical care to outpatients
- Admit Internal Medicine patients for outpatient visits and obtain through history including current medications and dosages, response to treatment and side effects, intensity and duration
- Ability to admit Internal Medicine patients for hospitalization, enter hospitalization orders and charges, appropriately round ICU on the case
- Successfully use all in house laboratory equipment to provide accurate results
- Safely and effectively take digital radiographs
- Be able to calculate drug dosages
- Give medications via all prescribed routes: PO, SC, IM, IV
- Proficiency with venous catheterization
- Possess or acquire knowledge of frequently performed reference laboratory tests and proper shipment protocols (ACTH Stim, GI Profiles, Bile Acids, etc).
- Effectively care for and communicate with clients
- Induce, monitor and recover anesthesia for internal medicine procedures such as endoscopy, bone marrow aspirates, and CT scans (RVT ONLY)
- Clean and maintain endoscopy room and supplies
- Ability to maintain and care for anesthesia equipment
Required Education and Experience
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent
- 2+ years of work experience as a veterinary assistant or RVT in a veterinary specialty/ER setting
Preferred Education
- 1+ years of work experience as an internal medicine RVT or assistant
- Associates degree in Veterinary Technology or higher
- Current RVT and/or VTS in NC
