Hexagon's Manufacturing Intelligence division is seeking an International Engineering Intern for our North Kingstown, RI location, with a subsequent placement at Hexagon Germany or Hexagon Italy as part of a year abroad the year following the internship at Hexagon North Kingstown.

Program Overview

This is a two-stage opportunity built for students in an International Engineering Program (IEP). The intern spends an initial summer term at our North Kingstown, RI facility, then continues the following year at Hexagon Germany or Hexagon Italy, applying what they learned in Rhode Island within one of our European engineering or manufacturing organizations.

Stage one - North Kingstown, RI: summer term, 40 hours per week, working alongside our systems, mechanical and manufacturing engineering teams.

Stage two - Germany or Italy: placement during the following academic year abroad, aligned with the student's IEP requirements and the receiving site's project needs.

Continuity: the project scope, mentor relationship and technical foundation established in stage one carry forward into the international placement.

Description

We are looking for an undergraduate internship candidate with a background in Mechanical, Electrical, Systems or Manufacturing Engineering, and a strong interest in cross-disciplinary, international work. Assignments may span mechanical, systems or manufacturing engineering topics, and are shaped around the intern's background and the needs of the engineering group.

Our engineering and manufacturing groups support all engineering and technical functions, and work continuously to improve the processes, cost, performance and reliability of our products. The International Engineering Intern works closely with these teams on tasks that contribute directly to the design, manufacture and assembly of Coordinate Measuring Machines.

Job Responsibilities

Systems and mechanical engineering topics

• Guided execution of projects assigned by Engineering Manager to provide production, design or manufacturing support or increase efficiency of engineering group
• Project execution will be supported by an engineering mentor
• Configuration of Coordinate Measuring System and electro-mechanical configurations
• Mechanical/electrical layouts or Software tool creation/utilization depending on applicant background
• Programming in measurement host software
• Troubleshooting and diagnostics of complete multidisciplinary systems
• Integration of new products into existing systems

Manufacturing engineering topics

• Develops and writes work instructions, sequence of operations as well as time estimates for each operation specification. Focused exclusively on Assembly processes.
• Supports and participates in continuous improvement activities that positively affect safety, the environment, quality, reliability, and productivity or improve the overall suitability and effectiveness of the management system, its processes and products.
• Analyzes existing assembly methods and proposes new methods to improve cost, reliability and quality of products and processes.
• Design, fabrication and implementaion of jigs, tools, fixtures and assembly aids.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

• Enrolled in a Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Manufacturing, Systems or Computer Engineering degree program, or other equivalent technical program, and in good academic standing.
• Preferably enrolled in the URI International Engineering Program (IEP) for German or Italian, and therefore bringing several years of language study - a prerequisite for the year abroad at Hexagon Germany or Hexagon Italy.
• A minimum of two years' enrollment in the degree program.
• Proficient in MS Office.
• Proficient in process writing and documentation.
• Able to work Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week, during the summer break.
• Able and willing to relocate to Germany or Italy for the following academic year.

Attributes and Preferred Experience

• Self-starting and enthusiastic to learn.
• Interest in multi-disciplinary work and experience.
• Interest in hands-on work, primarily with electrical or mechanical systems controlled by software.
• Comfortable collaborating across time zones, cultures and engineering conventions.
• Experience with metrology equipment or software a plus.
• Experience configuring complex electrical or mechanical systems a plus.
• Preferred discipline of mechanical, manufacturing, electrical or systems engineering.
