JOB INFORMATION

The Division of Aging and Independence is looking for a student intern!

Time Commitment: Work a maximum of 16 hours per week; varied days and hours Monday-Friday; 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. with some weekends and evenings; non-exempt; part-time; no-benefits; grant funded

The Frederick County, Division of Aging and Independence have been providing services and programs to older adults and their families for over 40 years. Our mission is to enrich the lives of older adults through community connections to services, programs and resources, with a goal of ensuring that Frederick County residents are empowered, engaged and equipped to live their best life. The Division seeks creative, energetic, compassionate and visionary candidates to join our diverse team of professionals who care about the well-being of Frederick County seniors. As an intern with the Division of Aging and Independence, youll play a key role in bringing Dementia Friendly Frederick Initiative to life across Frederick County. From supporting outreach efforts to helping implement creative programs, youll make a meaningful impact while gaining hands-on experience in public service and aging support. This is a chance to grow your skills, connect with local partners, and help create a more compassionate county for individuals living with dementia. The intern with receive direction from the Caregiver Support program staff. Supervision is received from Director of Resource and Service Navigation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with community groups to develop resources and materials to raise awareness about the Dementia Friendly Frederick initiative and other Aging and Independence programs
  • Educate the public, community leaders, and other interested parties about Dementia Friendly Frederick initiatives
  • Prepare articles, flyers, and other marketing materials for publication online, in newsletters, and newspapers
  • Perform administrative duties for the Caregiver Support Program to include data entry, processing applications and calculating costs
  • Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

The qualifications/requirements, knowledge/skills/abilities and physical requirements or working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an intern to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Enrolled in a college or university for the Fall 2026 semester, actively seeking a degree in Human Services, Public Health, or a closely related field. A transcript must be uploaded as an attachment to the application as evidence of enrollment. A copy of an unofficial transcript will be accepted.
  • Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.7 or higher. A transcript must be uploaded as an attachment to the application as evidence of GPA. A copy of an unofficial transcript will be accepted.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

A successful incumbent operating in this role displays the following:

  • Ability to arrange own frequent travel to meetings, work locations, and events as needed, including occasional urgent or time sensitive situations
  • Strong collaborative and teamwork skills
  • Strong clerical and record-keeping skills, including the ability to accurately perform basic math and financial functions
  • Strong and effective written and spoken (English) communication skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, representatives of cooperating agencies and the general public
  • Ability to effectively access and utilize Microsoft 365, e-mail, spreadsheet and other systems and equipment, and to learn new software as it is required
  • Ability to effectively create, update and maintain computerized and manual files and filing systems
  • Ability to work with sensitive and personal information and maintain confidentiality

PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN FOR:

  • Experience in a public facing customer service role
  • Experience maintaining a file management and/or electronic data management system
  • Experience in word processing, computerized spreadsheets, page layout, presentation, and other programs

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly sit; frequently walk; occasionally reach and perform repetitive motions; rarely lift up to 20 pounds
  • While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly work indoors; frequently work outdoors

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION / EXAMINATION PROCESS

  • Available for varied evening and weekend work hours to accommodate meetings, special events, etc.
  • Requires the ability to arrange and complete travel to various sites (using a car or other reliable transportation)
  • The grant that funds this position will determine the duration of this position

Savings Plan - Deferred Compensation:

The County offers a Section 457 Plan. Deferred compensation plans allow participants to save for retirement now and pay taxes later by contributing a portion of their salaries pre-tax to the plan. Contributions are invested at the employees direction into one or more of the variety of investment options offered by the plan.
