Patients need precise, minimally invasive care when open surgery is too much and medication is not enough. In this role, you turn imaging into treatment—shortening recovery, reducing complications, and giving referring physicians a trusted partner for complex vascular and oncologic disease. Your judgment at the console and at the bedside is what makes the service reliable.
Performance Objectives
Deliver a full range of image-guided diagnostic and therapeutic procedures with complication rates at or below accepted benchmarks.
Grow appropriate referrals by giving surgeons, oncologists, and hospitalists clear, timely recommendations and dependable follow-through.
Complete accurate procedure reports the same day so clinical decisions, handoffs, and coding stay intact.
Lead case review for complex embolization, oncology, and vascular patients and choose the least invasive plan that will work.
Raise first-case on-time starts, room turnover, and safe same-day discharge without trading away safety.
Coach nurses, technologists, and trainees so the suite runs to standard when you are not in the room.
Use peer review, dose management, and morbidity review to cut repeat procedures and preventable events.
Environment & Resources
You will practice in a hospital-based interventional suite with angiography, CT, and ultrasound guidance, backed by dedicated IR nurses and technologists. You report to the radiology or service chief and work daily with surgery, oncology, vascular medicine, and emergency care. A defined call model and protected time for quality work support both elective and urgent cases. Physicians help shape capital, inventory, and staffing decisions within the service-line budget.
Essential Qualifications
MD or DO, ABR or AOBR certification or equivalent, and fellowship training in interventional or vascular and interventional radiology, with licensure you can obtain.
Independent skill across core procedures, including vascular access, embolization, drainage, and biopsy.
Peer references and a complication profile consistent with high-reliability practice.
Comfort leading consent, peri-procedural care, and after-hours clinical decisions.
Clear communication with patients, families, and referring clinicians under time pressure.
Eligibility for hospital privileges and current maintenance of certification.
Role Selling Points
Real procedural autonomy inside a collaborative clinical culture, not a title without a practice.
A dedicated IR team and modern guidance platforms, not ad-hoc coverage of someone else’s room.
A defined call model built to protect recovery between urgent cases.
A path to service leadership for physicians who improve quality and referral trust.
Compensation tied to productivity, call, and outcomes—not seniority alone.
