Interventional Radiology Technologist (Neuro & Vascular) Temp.

The Neuro Interventional Radiology (Neuro IR) Technologist is responsible for providing technical and clinical support during diagnostic and therapeutic neurovascular procedures. The technologist operates advanced angiographic imaging equipment, assists physicians during neurointerventional procedures, ensures patient safety, maintains sterile technique, and collaborates with the multidisciplinary healthcare team to deliver high-quality patient care.

This role requires expertise in vascular imaging, radiation safety, sterile procedural practices, and the management of patients undergoing complex neurovascular interventions.

• Prepare and maintain Neuro IR suites for diagnostic and interventional procedures.
• Assist physicians during neurovascular procedures including, but not limited to:
• • Mechanical thrombectomy
  • Cerebral angiography
  • Aneurysm coiling
  • Flow diversion procedures
  • Carotid artery stenting
  • Embolization procedures
  • Intracranial stenting
• Scrub and prep desired area of interest, circulate, and monitor cases as assigned.
• Anticipate physician needs during procedures and maintain efficient workflow.
• Perform patient positioning and imaging acquisition in accordance with departmental protocols.
• Ensure proper handling and preparation of catheters, guidewires, stents, coils, thrombectomy devices, and other procedural equipment.

• Produces medical images to meet standards established in department protocols.
• Verifies that area of interest has been imaged according to standard department protocols. 
• Operates various computer systems and ensures images are in PACS with the correct  patient and examination identification information.
• Operates contrast injectors.
• Selects and modifies technical factors based on patient's age, weight, and physical condition to produce optimal images while keeping radiation exposure as low as reasonably achievable.
• Operates fixed and mobile radiographic and fluoroscopic equipment.
• Produces hard-copy images and/or digitally archived images for use in patient care.
• Assesses the patient in relation to the requested procedure by collecting pertinent data about the patient and the procedure. 
• Uses independent judgment and radiographic skills to position patients in order to obtain  quality exams.
• Assist in the billing process by providing/entering in the computer system the information about the supplies used.
• Provides inventory control for vascular and interventional specific supplies such as catheters, guide wires, stents, procedure sets, etc.
• Prep and drape the patient prior to any angiographic and interventional radiology procedures.
• Documents information about patient care and radiologic services provided.
• Prepares patient both physically and emotionally prior to examination, explaining procedures to allay patient fears.
• Educates the patient, family, and other health care providers as appropriate regarding the requested procedure.
• Analyzes collected data and uses professional judgment to select the most appropriate and cost-effective method for completing the requested procedure.
• Alters positioning of patient and/or equipment as required by patient condition to obtain required images. 
• Skill in communicating with patients of all ages to explain procedures and obtain patient cooperation in completing procedures. 
• Knowledge of Interventional Radiology supplies and techniques.
• Ability to operate the supply cabinets without complications.
• Must be able to operate a computer keyboard and mouse to enter information into various computer systems.
• Ability to respond appropriately in highly stressful emergency situations when a patient's life  is in jeopardy. 
• Experience to recognize when altering exam protocols is necessary to achieve desired imaging results.
• Ability to understand and adhere to exam protocols and guidelines.
• Differentiates between artifacts and normal pathological processes.
•  Skill in operating digital imaging and subtraction equipment.

• Determines need for repeat or additional images, and the technical factor or patient positioning adjustments required to correct image/examination deficiencies.

• Skill in applying the principles of radiation protection and safety. 

• Knowledge of the principles of digital imaging and digital subtraction techniques. 

• Knowledge of radiographic image production and processing.

• Knowledge of radiologic contrast media and medications routinely used in radiology.

• Knowledge of radiation physics, radiobiology, and radiation protection.

• Knowledge of medical terminology. Knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and pathology.

• Ability to accurately apply knowledge of radiologic positioning and exposure technique.         

• Performs all other duties as required.    

  Position Requirements:

• This position requires a minimum formal education of Associate Degree or certification equivalent and a minimum of 3 years job-related experience.

•  Desired (not required) criteria include:  Certification and current registration in Vascular- interventional Technology (VI) by ARRT.

• License, NY State Radiologic Technologist License & ARRT Certification.

• Requires minimum three years of previous experience as a Vascular Interventional Technologist.
