Job Description

Benefits:
  • 401(k)
  • Free uniforms
  • Training & development

Hello,
Thank you for your interest in joining Byers K9 Services | BKS Security as a K9 Handler.

We are currently reviewing applicants who have their own working K9, as well as applicants who would require a Company-provided canine. Both types of applicants may be considered.

Before proceeding with the hiring process, we want to ensure that every applicant clearly understands the position, working conditions, compensation, training commitments, K9 responsibilities, and Company expectations.

Please review this email in its entirety before responding. This information is intended to provide a clear understanding of what will be required should you be selected for employment.

1. CURRENT POSITION & PRIMARY ASSIGNMENT

The majority of available assignments involve overnight security operations. Applicants must be prepared to work nights, weekends, holidays, and outdoors in varying Colorado weather conditions, including snow, rain, extreme cold, and heat.

This is primarily a patrol and security position, not a detection-only position.

Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting routine interior and exterior security patrols
  • Inspecting building perimeters and assigned property
  • Identifying and reporting suspicious activity
  • Maintaining a visible security presence
  • Completing detailed patrol reports and documentation
  • Monitoring security concerns and potential safety hazards
  • Maintaining accountability throughout your assigned shift
  • Working independently during overnight hours
  • Maintaining proper control of your assigned K9
While detection training and occasional detection assignments may be available, we currently have limited operational detection work.

Applicants should not accept this position expecting to primarily conduct narcotics, explosives, or other detection searches.

You are expected to perform all responsibilities of a security officer. Your K9 serves as an additional operational resource.

2. COMPENSATION & STARTING PAY

The standard starting pay for new K9 Handlers is:

$25.00 per hour — Regular K9 Handler Duties

$15.50 per hour — Required Training and Meetings

Higher regular-duty rates may be considered based on verified experience, qualifications, certifications, and Company operational needs.

Pay increases are not automatic. Advancement and compensation adjustments may be based on:

  • Job performance and reliability
  • Attendance and punctuality
  • Professional conduct
  • K9 proficiency and certifications
  • Accountability and compliance with Company standards
  • Overall contribution to the K9 program
Handlers assigned a Company-owned take-home K9 receive separate compensation for approved routine off-duty K9 care and authorized K9-business transportation, subject to the applicable Company agreement.

3. PAYROLL SCHEDULE

Employees are paid biweekly on Wednesdays.

Payroll is processed based on completed pay periods after client invoicing.

Depending on your start date within the payroll cycle, your first paycheck will typically arrive approximately 3–4 weeks after your initial start date.

Applicants should be financially prepared for this initial payroll schedule.

Early Pay Assistance:

After completing 25 verified work hours, employees may request a one-time pay advance of up to $310.

This advancement:

  • Requires management approval
  • Is not guaranteed
  • Is available as a one-time assistance option
  • Will be deducted from the following paycheck
4. SCHEDULING, ATTENDANCE & PUNCTUALITY

Reliable attendance is an essential responsibility of this position.

You must be able to consistently report to Longmont or other assigned locations according to your approved schedule.

Assignments may include:

  • Overnight shifts
  • Weekends
  • Holidays
  • Inclement weather
  • Outdoor patrol operations
  • Schedule adjustments based on client requirements
Once a schedule is assigned and accepted, you are responsible for reporting to work unless a change is approved by management.

Punctuality means being fully prepared to begin working at your scheduled start time.

Arriving at the property, parking, changing clothes, preparing equipment, or walking to your post at the scheduled start time does not meet that expectation.

Employees should arrive early enough to be completely prepared before their scheduled shift begins.

Repeated tardiness, attendance violations, or failure to fulfill scheduled responsibilities may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination.

5. DRIVER’S LICENSE, VEHICLE & INSURANCE

All K9 Handlers are required to maintain:

  • A valid driver’s license
  • Reliable personal transportation
  • Current vehicle insurance
  • A vehicle capable of safely transporting a working canine
Employees may be required to provide copies of their driver’s license and proof of insurance.

Handlers are responsible for transporting their assigned K9 to work assignments, training, veterinary appointments, approved grooming, and other Company-directed activities.

Normal commuting between home and the assigned worksite, as well as commuting to regularly scheduled K9 training, is not reimbursed mileage.

Authorized, qualifying non-commuting K9-business transportation is addressed separately under the Company’s K9 transportation program.

Reliable transportation must be maintained throughout employment.

6. PERSONAL K9 REQUIREMENTS

Applicants who already own or work with a personal K9 may be considered for placement with that canine.

However, personally owned K9s are not automatically approved for Company assignments.

Before working for BKS, all personally owned K9s must:

  • Be evaluated by Complete Canine Training
  • Demonstrate appropriate obedience, temperament, control, and environmental stability
  • Be trained in bite/apprehension work
  • Meet Company operational and safety standards
  • Satisfy applicable working K9 certification requirements
  • Obtain certification through Drug Beat International before performing applicable detection duties
  • Maintain required proficiency and recertifications
Previous law enforcement experience, prior security assignments, or existing certification through another organization does not automatically qualify a dog for Company use.

BKS reserves the right to determine whether a personally owned K9 is suitable for assignment.

If your K9 does not meet our standards, you may still be considered for placement with a Company-owned canine, depending on your qualifications and dog availability.

7. COMPANY-OWNED K9 ASSIGNMENTS

Applicants are not required to personally own a working canine to be considered.

Byers K9 Services maintains Company-owned working K9s that may be assigned to approved handlers.

Approved handlers may be partnered with a Company-owned K9 that ordinarily becomes a take-home working dog.

All Company-issued K9s remain 100% the property of Byers K9 Services.

Housing, caring for, training, transporting, or working with a Company canine does not establish any ownership rights.

BKS retains the authority to assign, remove, replace, or reassign any Company-owned K9 based on operational, medical, behavioral, training, or professional considerations.

8. HOME REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPANY K9 HANDLERS

Before receiving a take-home Company K9, handlers must pass a BKS home inspection.

Your residence must provide a safe, secure, sanitary, and appropriate environment for a working canine.

Requirements include:

  • Adequate space for a Company-issued crate or kennel
  • Reliable utilities and proper temperature control
  • Permission to house the canine if subject to rental or HOA restrictions
  • The ability to safely separate the canine from children, visitors, and other animals when necessary
  • Secure containment and protection from unauthorized access
  • A household where unauthorized individuals will not handle, feed, train, discipline, walk, or remove the canine
  • Reliable transportation appropriate for K9 transport
Other household pets do not automatically disqualify an applicant. However, BKS must determine that all animals can be safely managed and separated.

9. DAILY K9 CARE & RESPONSIBILITY

Handlers assigned Company-owned K9s are responsible for their routine care and well-being while the canine is in their custody.

Responsibilities include:

  • Feeding and providing fresh water
  • Bathroom breaks and waste cleanup
  • Crate and kennel cleaning
  • Grooming and bathing as required
  • Monitoring the dog’s health, behavior, and condition
  • Maintaining assigned equipment
  • Properly securing and containing the canine
  • Following veterinary and feeding instructions
  • Reporting medical, behavioral, or safety concerns immediately
BKS provides and pays for approved canine food, veterinary care, working equipment, crates, collars, leashes, harnesses, and other required K9 equipment.

Handlers may not independently change the canine’s food, supplements, medications, training equipment, or care program without Company authorization.

Being entrusted with a working canine carries responsibilities that extend beyond your scheduled security shift.

10. MANDATORY K9 TRAINING

K9 training is mandatory for all active handlers, regardless of whether they work with a personally owned or Company-owned canine.

Regular Training Schedule:

Wednesdays — 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM

Unless otherwise directed by management.

Handlers must:

  • Attend all required training sessions
  • Arrive on time and prepared
  • Maintain canine handling proficiency
  • Follow trainer instructions
  • Complete assigned maintenance training
  • Maintain training documentation
  • Participate in evaluations and certification activities
  • Demonstrate safe and effective control of their canine
Training is an ongoing requirement throughout employment.

Failure to maintain proficiency, certification, attendance, training standards, or safe handling practices may result in removal from the K9 program.

11. INITIAL K9 HANDLER DEVELOPMENT

Applicants who do not possess sufficient documented handling experience may be required to complete an approved K9 Handler Academy or development program.

Participation and final assignment may be contingent upon successfully completing applicable training and evaluations.

Applicants who advance through the hiring process will receive additional information regarding available training opportunities, academy sponsorship, training obligations, and any applicable agreements.

12. UNIFORM & PROFESSIONAL APPEARANCE

Employees are responsible for purchasing the following required uniform items by their second paycheck:

  • 5.11 Tactical Battle Brown pants
  • Black duty boots
  • Standard black belt
All uniform items must meet Company specifications.

Employees must report to work wearing the complete approved uniform and maintain professional appearance and personal hygiene.

Company-issued uniform components and identification must be worn as directed.

13. COMMUNICATION REQUIREMENTS

All employees must maintain a working smartphone with reliable cellular service.

Employees are responsible for receiving and reviewing:

  • Work schedules
  • Management communications
  • Company announcements
  • Policy updates
  • Operational instructions
  • Training notifications
Employees must use Company-approved communication platforms and follow established communication procedures.

Failure to maintain a working phone, review Company communications, or remain informed does not excuse missed work responsibilities.

14. ACCOUNTABILITY & JOB PERFORMANCE

All employees are personally responsible for their assigned duties and performance.

This includes:

  • Attendance and punctuality
  • Proper communication
  • Completion of assigned patrols
  • Accurate reports and documentation
  • Equipment accountability
  • K9 handling and care
  • Training attendance and proficiency
  • Compliance with operational procedures
  • Overall reliability and professionalism
Employees are expected to demonstrate initiative, accountability, and the ability to perform assigned responsibilities without requiring repeated reminders from management.

Failure to consistently meet Company expectations may result in disciplinary action.

15. COMPANY POLICIES & PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS

Byers K9 Services operates under established security, operational, and K9 handling standards.

These standards are mandatory, not optional.

All employees are required to comply with:

  • Company policies and the Employee Handbook
  • Standard Operating Procedures
  • Site-specific Post Orders
  • Client requirements
  • K9 handling and safety procedures
  • Training and certification requirements
  • Attendance and scheduling policies
  • Reporting and documentation procedures
  • Lawful instructions from supervisors and management
Employees are expected to represent Byers K9 Services | BKS Security professionally at all times.

Poor performance, dishonesty, misconduct, failure to follow instructions, repeated attendance violations, or other serious policy violations may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination.

16. UNDERSTANDING THE POSITION

We want applicants to fully understand that this position is more than simply working with a dog.

You must first be a dependable security professional capable of working independently, maintaining accountability, conducting physical patrols, documenting activity, and providing professional security services.

K9 handling adds a substantial level of responsibility, including continuous training, safety obligations, proper handling, and potentially the care and housing of a Company-owned working canine.

This role requires discipline, consistency, professionalism, commitment, and a genuine willingness to develop as a working K9 handler.

If you are primarily interested in detection-only work, cannot regularly work overnight shifts, cannot meet mandatory training requirements, or are unable to fulfill the responsibilities outlined above, this position may not be appropriate for you at this time.
