    Lab Assistant

    Master of Science in Occupational Therapy, Bert Bradford School of Health Sciences, University of Charleston

    Position Summary:

    This position serves as the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) Lab Assistant to the MSOT Program Director, Academic Fieldwork Coordinator, and all MSOT Faculty, both on-site and remote, for the Bert Bradford School of Health Sciences and performs all duties related thereto. The Occupational Therapy Lab Assistant supports the organization, delivery, and maintenance of lab-based learning experiences aligned with the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) Standards for occupational therapy education. This position plays a key role in facilitating student skill development, coordinating with faculty to implement and assess competencies, and ensuring the lab environment supports the program's curricular goals. Responsibilities also include contributing to course tasks, program evaluation, assisting with events that support student recruitment and retention, and participating in broader university initiatives as requested.

    Essential Responsibilities:

    The candidate must have the minimum necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities expected for the position.

    • Organize and maintain a simulated occupational therapy lab for student practice and skill acquisition

    • Prepare classrooms and labs for scheduled instructional activities

    • Assist students with accessing and using equipment and resources during lab sessions

    • Monitor and support safe and secure use of lab space and equipment

    • Track inventory and maintain equipment and supplies; assist with purchasing as needed

    • Complete all equipment safety checks routinely

    • Maintain clear communication with faculty regarding lab needs and operations

    • Support course instructors with skill-based student learning, evaluation, and remediation

    • Recommend additional resources (equipment, software) to enhance lab learning

    • Participate in program-related events such as admissions activities, student orientations, open houses, and all MSOT student events

    • Administer elements of the program's assessment system related to lab and fieldwork preparation

    • Mentor and support underperforming students through remediation efforts

    • Complete pre and post lab disinfection procedures

    • Assist with fieldwork processes as requested

    • Travel Requirements:

    • Travel to assist with fieldwork site visits, student community service events, and any other student related learning offsite events

    • Physical Demands:

    • This position requires occasional climbing, stooping, crawling, lifting, pulling, and pushing up to 50 lbs.

    • Frequent walking, standing, and balancing is necessary

    • The role demands constant sitting, hand/wrist movements, verbal communication, and near/far vision with depth and color perception

    • Physical strength to exert 20-50 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, and up to 10 lbs. constantly is required

    • Perform other professional duties as assigned

    Qualifications:

    • Must be an occupational therapy assistant with a minimum of an associate's degree.
    • Holds and maintains a current occupational therapy license in West Virginia (or eligible).
    • Minimum of three years of clinical experience.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, staff, and external partners.
    • Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • Proficiency in computer and educational technologies.
    • Commitment to student-centered support and professional integrity.
    • Ability to work independently, demonstrate initiative, and assess operations to improve program effectiveness.
    • Must maintain confidentiality and comply with institutional and accreditation policies.
    • Accommodate a day, evening and weekend lab schedule for hybrid program.
