Pay Range: $82,640-$112,396

What you will be doing

The Lab Engineer plays a critical role in ensuring the quality and compliance of aluminum extruded products. This position involves performing BQA, mechanical testing and, in some cases, metallurgical testing to verify material properties and dimensions against customer requirements and industry standards (e.g., Aluminum Standards Association guidelines). The Lab Engineer will complete chemical analysis and material qualification testing, complete testing required for root cause analysis of quality claims and at times travel for plant support. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, mechanically inclined, and committed to maintaining a safe and efficient laboratory environment. This role's primary function is to prepare and perform rigorous testing and metallurgical analysis on our aluminum products and report the results.

  • Quality Testing: Perform a variety of tests on aluminum materials as per internal / external customer work order.
  • Sample preparation and metallurgical analysis utilizing light optical microscopy
  • Prepare, analyze, and report mechanical properties of aluminum extrusions in accordance with testing procedures and customer required specifications.
  • Perform monthly Billet Quality Assessment reporting for regional cast houses
  • Mechanical testing (TYE, hardness, bend testing, other testing as required)
  • Chemical analysis (OES, etc.)
  • SEM / EDS Metallography
  • Drive continuous improvements throughout the lab utilizing our Extrusion Business System (EBS) methodology.

What will make you successful?

Requirements:

  • Previous experience in a quality control lab or a manufacturing/production environment, preferably with exposure to metal extrusion processes. Requires hands-on lab experience.
  • Good mechanical aptitude to safely and efficiently operate equipment including testing equipment, band saw, polishing machines, aging ovens, etc.
  • Good attention to detail with repetitive work processes
  • Must have good safety awareness and be willing to work with hazardous chemicals
  • Must be thorough, independent worker and flexible
  • Must be curious and eager to learn new processes
  • Must have strong soft skills like problem solving and collaborative teamwork.
  • Must be willing to train and mentor lab technicians.

Preferred Skills:

  • Aluminum or Steel manufacturing experience desired.
  • Experience with light optical microscopy in a R&D laboratory (preferred).
  • Experience with SEM/ EDS, Keyence and other metallurgical analysis tools
  • Metallurgical background with on-the-job experience
