Job Summary

Summary:

Performs a variety of research and research administration activities in direct support of the Department''s research faculty and programs. Responsible for managing the lab personnel and the overall functioning of the research operation. Serves as a front-line resource for researchers in the Department, acting as liaison to internal administrative units and external sponsors on matters relating to research programs.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervises the operations of the lab.
  • Oversees use of laboratory funds, supply inventory and staff activities.
  • Coordinates all regulatory and compliance activities.
  • Contributes to scientific literature and may present the data at meetings.
  • Trains staff in specialized lab techniques.
  • Serve as the Lab safety officer.

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's Degree Related Field of Study required

Experience:

Experience in an academic or laboratory research setting 3-5 years required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to make independent decisions.
  • Aptitude for technical problem solving.
  • Ability to effectively supervise others.
  • Excellent Organizational skills.
  • Must possess strong budget and management skills.
  • Excellent judgement and ability to interpret information.

Essential Functions (Key Roles & Responsibilities):

  • Develops, optimizes, and implements experimental protocols, assay techniques, and research procedures.
  • Designs, conducts, and analyzes complex in vitro and in vivo studies focused on autoimmunity, inflammation, and anti-tumor immunity.
  • Independently performs non-routine, highly specialized experimental procedures and disease models.
  • Maintains and manages large, complex mouse colonies, including breeding strategies, genotyping, colony expansion, and animal transfers.
  • Synthesizes, interprets, and communicates experimental findings and research outcomes.
  • Performs statistical analyses and provides recommendations for experimental design and data interpretation.
  • Composes and may present sections of research reports, scientific manuscripts, grant applications, and laboratory presentations.
  • Reviews and contributes to grant budget justifications and research planning documents.
  • Oversees laboratory operations, including purchasing, inventory management, material transfers, and equipment coordination.
  • Ensures compliance with institutional, regulatory, and safety requirements, including IACUC, IRB, and EHS policies.
  • Reviews, edits, and maintains animal use, biosafety, and regulatory protocols and amendments.
  • Supervises, trains, and mentors research staff, technicians, students, and laboratory trainees.
  • Coordinates laboratory resources, personnel schedules, and research activities to support scientific objectives.
  • Monitors laboratory expenditures and assists with budget planning, forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Prepares written and/or verbal status reports.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.
