Advertising/Posting Title Laboratory Safety Technician Posting Summary

The Laboratory Safety Technician supports the University's laboratory safety, chemical safety, hazardous waste management, and environmental compliance programs in research, teaching, and other academic settings across campus. This position conducts laboratory inspections, supports hazardous waste operations, assists with chemical inventory management and laboratory chemical distribution activities, and participates in safety outreach, training, and hazardous materials response activities to help maintain a safe learning and research environment.

This position plays an important role in supporting the University's chemical safety programs and requires strong chemistry knowledge related to chemical hazards, compatibility, storage, segregation, labeling, and safe handling practices. Responsibilities include supporting chemical inventory oversight, hazardous chemical segregation, laboratory chemical distribution, chemical surplus management, and guidance related to safe chemical handling and storage practices. The position works directly with faculty, staff, students, researchers, and laboratory personnel to support compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, NRC, and related regulatory requirements, as well as UVM's Laboratory Safety Policy and Environmental Management Plan.

Responsibilities also include assisting with hazardous waste handling, laboratory operational support activities, compliance documentation, equipment decontamination verification, and laboratory closeout activities. The Laboratory Safety Technician works closely with Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) professional staff to support consistent safety and environmental compliance programs across campus. This position offers opportunities to work in diverse laboratory and academic environments while contributing to environmental stewardship, regulatory compliance, emergency preparedness, and a strong culture of safety at the University of Vermont.

Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)

  • Associate's degree in chemistry, biology, environmental sciences, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, or related scientific field
  • 1-3 years' experience in in laboratory operations, hazardous waste management, environmental compliance, occupational safety, research support, or related field
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety practices, hazardous materials handling, and applicable OSHA, EPA, DOT, and related regulations required.
  • Requires strong chemistry knowledge related to chemical hazards, compatibility, storage, segregation, labeling, and safe handling practices
  • Strong analytical, communication, and program‑management skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency including Microsoft Office applications, email, database systems, and electronic recordkeeping required.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection, and maintain medical clearance for respirator use required.
  • Valid driver's license or ability to obtain required.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, environmental sciences, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, or related scientific field
  • Experience in higher education, research, laboratory, or other regulated environments desirable.
  • Experience conducting laboratory inspections, compliance audits, or hazardous materials assessments desirable.
  • Experience with hazardous chemical, biological, radiological, universal, or regulated waste management desirable.
  • Experience supporting chemical inventory systems, laboratory chemical distribution, chemical surplus programs, or chemical segregation activities desirable.
  • HAZWOPER, DOT hazardous materials shipping, RCRA, or emergency response training/certifications desirable.
