Responsibilities:

A Laboratory Support Technician (LST) III performs blood specimen collection on adult and pediatric patients including venous, capillary, and blood culture samples. The LST III orders laboratory tests in the Laboratory Information System, processes, files requisitions, processes specimens for testing, prepares samples to be sent to reference laboratories for testing and processes test results that were referred to other reference laboratories.

 

The LST III trains and competency assesses new staff with patience and understanding and acts as a resource for staff regarding daily operations within the assigned area. The LST III will also routinely cover additional hours or shifts when coverage is needed. Works with staff to investigate errors suggest practice changes to avoid future errors, implement appropriate changes and monitors to assure changes are maintained. Assists in developing, monitoring and measuring departmental QA and PI initiatives for the section. The LST III serves as a preceptor for new staff, assuring competency assessments are complete and training meets the department and employee needs. The LST III will also routinely cover additional hours or shifts when coverage is needed.

  • Identifies all patients by verifying name, date of birth, as well as verifying medical record number  against Epic and/or the paper requisition prior to specimen collection. Performs routine/STAT  phlebotomy after verifying patient’s identity. Labels specimens in the presence of the patient.
  • Communicates with all patients, explaining the procedure, answering questions and providing  information in a manner that assures confidentiality and handles health information in accordance with HIPAA regulations
  • Collects appropriate and high quality specimens for all tests ordered (venous and capillary) from all age groups. Routinely works in an efficient manner, regularly meeting the draw standard of 7-9 inpatients and 8-10 outpatients per hour and assists coworkers when work in the assigned area is complete.
  • Reviews all specimens and requisitions or batch logs to assure that the appropriate specimen for each test ordered has been collected, each specimen meets the quality requirements, and had been
    appropriately labeled. Validates that all specimens were transported appropriately and have been
    received, completing incident reports or other applicable reports when there is a variance. Completes
    all receiving steps following established Laboratory guidelines.
  • Receives the batch and/or specimen in the LIS, entering required information as needed. For tests that have not been entered into the LIS, enters all practitioner orders accurately. Delivers STAT, urgent or other specimens that are processed in the technical area in a timely manner.
  • Processes all specimens accurately, consistently relabels and/or aliquots specimens, maintaining
    specimen integrity. Delivers specimens that are performed within the lab promptly and prepares
    specimens to be sent to reference labs accurately following established Laboratory policies to meet
    expected turnaround times.
  • Meets requirements of LST I, LST II, and performs at least four of the following to maintain career ladder status:
  • Achieves and maintains national phlebotomy certification
  • Routinely draws blood on inpatient floors
  • Performs waived testing
  • Oversees section supplies and completes purchase requisitions
  • Oversees documentation of section maintenance
  • Contributes to the selection of LST I candidates
  • Regularly monitors Right Fax for any failed faxes and follows up as needed.
  • Performs EKGs
  • Performs DNA collection
  • Performs collection for employee drug testing
  • Tracks expiration dates for supplies and takes action to rectify prior to expiration date
  • Consistently follows all hospital and laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Completes responsibilities defined on the laboratory’s task lists.
  • Demonstrates the ability to train and competency assess new staff with patience and understanding. Serves as a preceptor for new staff, assuring competency assessments are complete and training
    meets the department and employee needs
  • Acts as a resource for staff regarding daily operations within the assigned area. Offers to assist others without being asked
  • Consistently shares information/knowledge that is helpful to co-workers. Communicates information
    clearly and accurately
  • Remains calm when faced with obstacles. Shows respect for others and their opinion. Takes
    responsibility for oneself and improving own ability
  • Consistently meets deadlines and acts independently within the scope of job responsibilities.

  • Routinely offering to cover additional hours or shifts when coverage is needed
  • Assists in service recovery when needed
  • Consistently handling challenging situations in a calm and professional manner
  • Works with staff to investigate errors suggest practice changes to avoid future errors, implement
    appropriate changes and monitors to assure changes are maintained
  • Assists in developing, monitoring and measuring departmental QA and PI initiatives for the section
  • Assist in training for non-laboratory staff in phlebotomy and processing at least 5 times annually
  • Performs other duties as assigned within scope of practice
Qualifications:

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED, required

Experience:

  • Minimum two (2) years experience as an LST, required
  • Minimum five (5) years experience as an LST, preferred

License/ Certification:

  • CPT-A Phlebotomy Certification (CPT) from training in a formal phlebotomy program which includes a minimum of sixty hours of didactic training and sixty hours of clinical experience, or one hundred observed phlebotomy draws, preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Medium Work - Exerting up to 50 lbs. for force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects
  • Occasional crouching, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, stooping, fit testing
  • Frequent typing/clerical/dexterity, grasping, hearing, seeing/monitor/computer use, standing, talking, visual acuity (color, depth, perception) walking

Hazards: 

  • Frequent bodily fluids/bloodborne exposure

Working Conditions:

  • Occasional noise

Travel:

  • Occasional Travel - The job may require travel from time- to-time, but not on a regular basis.
