Laborer – Submarine Shipyard

 

A Laborer in a submarine shipyard performs a variety of manual tasks to support shipyard operations, maintenance activities, construction projects, and trades personnel involved in the repair, overhaul, and construction of submarines and related facilities to include janitorial duties.

 

This position is responsible for maintaining safe and clean work areas, moving materials and equipment, assisting skilled trades, and supporting daily operational requirements throughout the shipyard. Be self-motivated.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Perform janitorial and general labor duties in support of shipyard operations and maintenance activities.
• Perform Floor maintenance by use of floor scrubbers and floor extractors.
• Load, unload, move, and stage materials, tools, equipment, and supplies throughout the facility and waterfront areas.
• Assist skilled trades personnel such as carpenters, painters, pipefitters, electricians, mechanics, and welders as directed.
• Maintain cleanliness of workspaces, shops, dry docks, piers, and surrounding areas.
• Remove debris, scrap materials, and waste in accordance with safety and environmental procedures.
• Operate basic hand tools, power tools, and material handling equipment safely and effectively.
• Support setting up and breakdown of work areas, barricades, staging, and temporary structures.
• Follow all shipyard safety regulations, confined space requirements, and hazardous material handling procedures.
• Participate in daily safety briefings, training, and operational meetings.
• Perform snow removal, grounds maintenance, and emergency response support when required with the use of machinery.
• Work in industrial environments, dry docks, mechanical spaces, and outdoor conditions.

• Performing physically demanding work including lifting, carrying, bending, climbing, and prolonged standing.

• Work in confined spaces, elevated areas, and varying weather conditions.

• Basic knowledge of industrial safety practices and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

• Following verbal and written instructions.

• Skilled at operating floor scrubbing machines, to strip wax and refinnish floors.

• Willingness to work off hours for floor projects.

Qualifications:

Required:

• High school diploma or GED or 2 years of related technical experience
• 0-5 years of experience in construction or landsacping 

• Must be able to perform the essential duties of this role, which include up to 8 hours of continuous physical labor per shift, with or without reasonable accommodation

Preferred:

• Previous shipyards, construction, industrial, warehouse, or labor experience.
• Experience working in a military, maritime, or manufacturing environment.
• Equipment operation experience
• OSHA or industrial safety training certifications
• Experience in snow/deicing operations and use of snow removal equipment

Skills:

• Basic knowledge of industrial safety practices and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Competent at following verbal and written instructions
• Reliable attendance and willing to work overtime, weekends, or off shift work as needed
• Skilled with operating floor scrubbing machines, to strip wax and refinish floors
