Ever wonder what goes into turning a piece of land into a neighborhood, business, school, or other place people use every day?

As a Land Development Engineering Intern at HR Green, you'll work alongside experienced engineers and designers to learn how sites are planned and designed from the ground up.

You'll see how grading, drainage, roads, utilities, and site layout all come together to create places where people live, work, and spend time.

This isn't an internship where you'll spend the summer watching from the sidelines. You'll be part of the team, learning by doing.

What You'll Experience in Land Development

Land Development brings together many areas of civil engineering to turn ideas for a property into designs that can actually be built.

During your internship, you may:

• Support site design for residential, commercial, institutional, or industrial development projects
• Assist with site layouts, grading, drainage, stormwater management, and utility design
• Help prepare engineering calculations, drawings, plans, and project documentation
• Gain exposure to Civil 3D and other engineering and design tools
• Support materials prepared for municipalities and other review agencies
• Participate in field visits and project discussions to see how designs connect to real site conditions
• Work alongside engineers and designers while learning how the different pieces of a development come together

You don't need to arrive knowing how to do all of this. That's what the internship is for.

Your project work is only one part of the experience. Our internship program is designed to help you learn, explore, and start figuring out where you want to go in your engineering career.

Throughout the summer, you'll have opportunities to:

• Participate in a structured intern learning experience
• Learn from experienced engineers and professionals who can help you grow
• Join roundtables and conversations about engineering, consulting, professional development, and career paths
• Learn about other areas of civil engineering across HR Green and, when opportunities are available, gain exposure to other teams
• Build your skills through training and LinkedIn Learning
• Connect with other interns, engineers, and leaders across the firm

You don't have to have your entire career figured out before you start. You may leave the summer knowing Land Development is exactly where you want to be, or with a better understanding of another area of civil engineering that interests you. We want to give you the experiences and exposure to help you find where you fit.

Qualifications

• Be currently enrolled at an accredited college or university pursuing a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline
• Be available to work full time during Summer 2027, typically from mid May or early June through early August
• Experience with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, surveying, site design, grading, drainage, stormwater, or other civil engineering tools is a plus, but previous Land Development or engineering internship experience is not required.

Compensation

$18-28/hr

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in accordance with the Illinois Salary Transparency amendment to the Equal Pay Act of 2003. The final agreed-upon compensation is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, skills, prior work experience, competencies, and geographic work location. The total annual compensation package may consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate, after a qualifying period, in our performance and discretionary incentive bonus program(s).
