The County of San Diego is currently recruiting for the position of

LAUNDRY WORKER

Future Salary Increase

June 2027 - 4.5% increase to base pay (3% Across-the- Board + 1.50% Market Adjustment)

In addition to base salary, Laundry Workers may be eligible for additional premiums:

  • $0.25 per hour premium for working in a medical/detention facility (or an additional 5% above base salary for assignment to Polinsky Children's Center)
  • $1.25 per hour premium for the supervision of Sheriffs incarcerated workers
  • $0.80 per hour shift differential for Overnight Shifts
  • Positions may be eligible for bilingual premium depending on assignment

Per County rules, this position is eligible for appointment at step 1, $41,995.20 annually.

County employees are subject to the County Promotion Rule for step placement in accordance with Comp Ord 1.3.5.

Laundry Worker is a journey-level service maintenance class responsible for washing, drying, pressing, sorting, and issuing of laundry items in County detention or residential facilities. Incumbents in this class also assign, train, and review the work of incarcerated workers in detention facilities or staff in residential facilities who are assigned to work in the laundry.

Current vacancies are in the Sheriff's Office. All eligible applicants are encouraged to apply as the eligible list created from this recruitment may also be used for vacancies in other County of San Diego departments.

Education and/or Experience

  • Six (6) months of experience performing laundry, housekeeping, custodial or warehouse duties in a large agency that demonstrate the possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above; AND,
  • Possession of basic knowledge of high school level mathematics preferably demonstrated by the completion of high school or GED certification.

Note: Experience using large capacity equipment (operating washers, dryers, presses, and other related equipment holding from 50 - 125 lbs. in a facility is strongly preferred.

Condition of Employment

As part of the County of San Diego's pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position. Current County employees may be excluded from this process.

Working Conditions

  • Required to work in hot areas, with contaminated clothing, push heavy carts, and must be physically able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Incumbents may be exposed to constant noise and the possibility of infections and skin irritants.
  • Must be willing to work any shift, on holidays or weekends.
  • Must be willing to work with inebriated, uncooperative, and/or emotionally disturbed persons; and in a locked detention facility, working with incarcerated workers.
  • May be subject to involuntary overtime, shift, weekend, and holiday work.

  • Must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness.
  • Prior to appointment, candidates will be subject to a thorough background investigation which may include a psychological, truth verification or other examination or test.

Evaluation Process

Qualified applicants will be placed on a six (6) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment application.
