Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Lead Electrical Training Instructor to deliver advanced, hands-on electrical skills training for journeymen and experienced electrical craft professionals. The instructor will lead practical training in low-voltage systems, motor and equipment wiring, and medium-voltage cable termination, maintenance, testing, and inspection.

The ideal candidate is a highly accomplished electrical professional and skilled trades educator with significant field experience in industrial, commercial, infrastructure, or complex project environments. This individual must possess deep technical knowledge of electrical safety, cable preparation and termination, motor and control wiring, switchgear and load centers, medium-voltage systems, testing and inspection, enclosure requirements, and code-compliant installation practices.

This is not a traditional classroom lecture role. The Lead Instructor will demonstrate technical procedures, supervise hands-on labs, coach workmanship and troubleshooting, evaluate practical performance, and ensure participants can safely apply industry standards, manufacturer requirements, and quality expectations in realistic field scenarios.

Key Responsibilities

· Deliver instructor-led and hands-on electrical training for journeymen and experienced electrical craft professionals in low- and medium-voltage applications.

· Teach electrical safety practices, hazard recognition, PPE selection and inspection, arc-flash awareness, approach boundaries, lockout/tagout, absence-of-voltage verification, and safe tool use.

· Facilitate practical instruction aligned with applicable OSHA requirements, NFPA 70E, NFPA 70/NEC, IEEE guidance, NEMA standards, IEC considerations, NETA practices, manufacturer specifications, and established industry requirements.

· Demonstrate and coach cable preparation, stripping, lug and connector selection, mechanical and compression terminations, crimping, torquing, heat-shrink systems, taping methods, sealing, and strain-relief practices.

· Lead low-voltage termination and testing labs involving cable construction, continuity testing, insulation resistance testing, CAT-rated multimeters, insulation testers, routing, cabinet layout, labeling, documentation, and inspection.

· Teach motor and equipment wiring, including wiring diagram interpretation, delta and wye connections, phase rotation, motor protection, control circuits, interlocks, relays, contactors, reduced-voltage starting methods, and troubleshooting.

· Provide applied instruction on switchgear, load centers, circuit breakers, bus connections, breaker racking positions, control and auxiliary wiring, panel installation, phasing, and testing procedures.

· Deliver medium-voltage training covering MV system architecture, cable construction, cable accessories, cable identification and tracing, preparation of semiconductor and insulation layers, and installation of heat-shrink, cold-shrink, taped, and molded terminations.

· Demonstrate the proper use of calibrated termination, crimping, torque, diagnostic, and test equipment and reinforce manufacturer-specific procedures and quality requirements.

· Facilitate equipment and performance testing activities involving cables, terminations, transformers, switchgear, and circuit breakers; coach participants in interpreting test data and identifying potential system or workmanship concerns.

· Teach enclosure selection, NEMA and IP classifications, sealing, gasketing, environmental protection, cable-entry systems, bend-radius requirements, and installation practices for wet, corrosive, hazardous, and other demanding environments.

· Reinforce professional labeling, traceability, documentation, inspection-ready installation practices, and quality assurance throughout all technical activities.

· Evaluate participant technical performance through hands-on skills assessments, observation, troubleshooting exercises, peer inspections, and practical demonstrations.

· Maintain a safe, organized, and performance-focused lab environment and verify appropriate use, inspection, and control of tools, equipment, PPE, and training materials.

· Collaborate with electrical SMEs, project leaders, safety professionals, quality personnel, and training stakeholders to maintain technical accuracy and field relevance.

· Support instructor calibration, train-the-trainer activities, lab standardization, and continuous improvement of technical exercises and assessment practices.

Minimum Qualifications

· Minimum of 10 years of progressive electrical trade experience in industrial, commercial, infrastructure, power distribution, manufacturing, mission-critical, or similarly complex electrical environments.

· Journeyman electrician qualification, state electrical license, nationally recognized electrical craft credential, or equivalent documented electrical trade experience and competency.

· Demonstrated field experience with low-voltage electrical systems and applications up to 1 kV, including cable installation, preparation, termination, testing, control wiring, equipment wiring, and inspection.

· Demonstrated field experience with medium-voltage systems in the 1 kV–35 kV range, including MV cable construction, preparation, termination, equipment interfaces, testing, maintenance, or inspection.

· Hands-on experience with mechanical and compression terminations, hydraulic/manual/battery-powered crimping tools, calibrated torque tools, heat-shrink and cold-shrink systems, and electrical taping methods.

· Working knowledge of motors, motor terminations, motor control systems, switchgear, load centers, circuit breakers, transformers, control cabinets, and related power distribution equipment.

· Demonstrated experience using and teaching electrical test equipment such as CAT-rated digital multimeters, insulation resistance testers, meggers, and other diagnostic or acceptance-testing equipment appropriate to the work.

· Strong working knowledge of NFPA 70E electrical safety practices and NFPA 70/NEC requirements applicable to electrical installation, termination, equipment, wiring, labeling, and inspection.

· Working knowledge of OSHA electrical safety requirements and relevant IEEE, NEMA, IEC, NETA, or manufacturer standards and practices.

· Demonstrated ability to interpret electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, equipment documentation, cable and termination specifications, test results, and manufacturer instructions.

· Experience training, mentoring, supervising, or coaching electricians, apprentices, journeymen, technicians, or other skilled trades professionals.

· Ability to demonstrate technical procedures clearly, identify unsafe or deficient workmanship, and provide specific corrective coaching.

· Ability to evaluate hands-on skills objectively and determine whether participants can safely and accurately perform required electrical tasks.

· Strong communication, facilitation, and technical coaching skills with the ability to establish credibility with experienced electrical craft professionals.

· Ability and willingness to travel to project sites and training locations as required.

Preferred Credentials and Experience

· Journeyman electrician card/license, Master Electrician license, Electrical Contractor license, nationally recognized electrical craft credential, or equivalent documented electrical trade experience and demonstrated competency.

· NCCER Electrical Instructor Certification, NCCER Master Trainer, or equivalent skilled trades instructor qualification.

· NFPA 70E training or certification and demonstrated experience applying electrical safe work practices in field environments.

· OSHA 30-Hour Construction or General Industry credential; OSHA 500/501 or comparable safety trainer experience is highly desirable.

· NETA testing experience, NICET electrical power testing credentials, or documented experience with acceptance and maintenance testing of electrical power equipment.

· Manufacturer-specific training or field experience with medium-voltage cable termination systems, including heat-shrink and cold-shrink products.

· Experience with electrical cable testing, insulation resistance testing, HiPot testing, fault location, cable tracing, or interpretation of electrical test reports.

· Experience with MV switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, pad-mounted equipment, underground distribution, and associated terminations and accessories.

· Experience with motor control centers, reduced-voltage starters, relays, contactors, interlocks, auxiliary circuits, and troubleshooting motor control systems.

· Experience with NEMA/IP enclosure requirements, Roxtec or comparable cable-entry sealing systems, CGB fittings, environmental sealing, and hazardous-location installations.

· Experience delivering competency-based, performance-based, or lab-intensive skilled trades education.

· Formal train-the-trainer, adult learning, technical education, apprenticeship instructor, or workforce development experience.

· Prior leadership experience as a general foreman, electrical foreman, superintendent, electrical field engineer, commissioning technician, testing technician, or senior electrical trainer.

· Experience supporting large-scale construction, infrastructure, industrial, energy, advanced manufacturing, or mission-critical projects.

The instructor must be able to challenge experienced electricians respectfully, maintain rigorous safety and quality expectations, and create a hands-on training environment focused on measurable field performance.

Training Environment

Training is delivered through instructor-led technical instruction and extensive hands-on laboratory practice. Participants work with realistic electrical equipment, cable, terminations, tools, test instruments, cabinet and equipment mockups, and field-based work scenarios. The Lead Instructor is expected to demonstrate procedures, supervise technical practice, coach workmanship, reinforce code and safety requirements, and evaluate participant competency through observable performance.
