Job Description

Casey''s is looking for a Lead IT Engineer to help shape the shared platforms that power our digital products. This hands-on technical leader will guide a team in building reliable, scalable solutions while making it easier for internal product teams to deliver through automation, self-service capabilities, and cloud-native practices.

The Lead IT Engineer will influence technical direction, help shape platform roadmaps, mentor engineers, and improve essential production services. Working with Product Managers, Architects, QA, and business stakeholders, you''ll turn business goals into practical plans and high-quality outcomes. This is an opportunity to shape the shared platforms that help Casey''s product teams build and operate software. Your work can make engineers more effective and the services they depend on more reliable.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Guide the team in setting technical goals and delivering complex solutions that meet customer, platform, and business needs.
  • Shape the platform roadmap with the Engineering Manager, Product Manager, and Architect. Clarify requirements, explain tradeoffs, and prioritize work that improves developer productivity and the internal developer experience.
  • Lead technical assessments, design reviews, and integrations across cloud infrastructure, API gateways, GraphQL, APIs, CI/CD, and observability.
  • Build infrastructure improvements, reusable Terraform modules, GitHub Actions workflows, and other self-service capabilities.
  • Help product teams adopt shared platform capabilities, solve integration challenges, and strengthen their engineering and operational practices.
  • Share ownership of critical developer and production services by participating in the team''s weekly on-call rotation. Use logs and dashboards to identify risks, troubleshoot complex issues, restore service, and prevent recurring problems.
  • Improve quality through code reviews, actionable feedback, automated testing, and close coordination with QA and engineering partners.
  • Lead team ceremonies and cross-functional technical discussions. Use delivery outcomes to improve team practices and align decisions with business goals.
  • Mentor engineers, share knowledge, and assess how relevant industry practices and emerging technologies apply to the platform.

Compensation: Starting pay range: $117,000 - $160,900. Actual pay may vary based on Casey's assessment of the candidate''s knowledge, skills, abilities (KSAs), related experience, education, and qualifications. Other factors impacting pay include local prevailing wages and internal equity. This position is eligible for an annual cash bonus based on company performance. Our full salary range for this role does extend beyond the hiring range listed, allowing team members the opportunity to continue to grow within the company.

  • This position requires authorization to work in the U.S. without the need for employment-based immigration sponsorship now or in the future. Casey's will not provide sponsorship or employer support for applications or petitions for F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, H-1B, L-1, TN, O-1, E-3, H-1B1, J-1, or any other employment-based visa.

  • Bachelor''s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience.

  • At least seven years of experience building and maintaining technical solutions in a business environment.

  • Designing and operating cloud-based infrastructure, preferably Azure, using infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform.

  • Experience building GraphQL or REST APIs using C# and container applications.

  • Experience operating API gateways, GraphQL routers, and production services, with tools such as Azure API Management.

  • Prior hands on experience creating reusable GitHub Actions workflows and improving CI/CD automation.

  • Working experience implementing observability practices, including logging, monitoring, and alerting, using tools such as New Relic.

  • Prior experience working with Oracle Cloud or the Databricks ecosystem in addition to Azure.

  • Track record of collaborating with network and network-security teams to deliver secure infrastructure.

  • Proven track record of guiding internal engineering teams in a shared platform, developer enablement, or platform engineering environment using agile practices such as Kanban, pairing, and continuous improvement.

  • Communicate clearly with technical and non-technical partners, including explaining technical decisions and tradeoffs.

  • Build relationships, facilitate collaboration, resolve conflict constructively, and create alignment across teams.

  • Lead complex technical initiatives and influence technical decisions across teams.

  • Evaluate and communicate architectural, operational, and business tradeoffs.

  • Design and optimize complex systems for performance, scalability, maintainability, and reliability.

  • Identify risks, analyze complex issues, evaluate alternatives, and drive resolution.

  • Prioritize work, exercise sound judgment, and maintain attention to detail when circumstances change.

  • Mentor engineers and promote sound engineering, delivery, and operational practices.

  • Adapt, learn, and improve practices as technologies, priorities, or requirements change.

  • Participation in the weekly on-call rotation for critical developer and production services is a required part of this role.

  • Work is primarily performed in an office setting.

This role does not allow for 100% remote work. Qualified candidates must live within a daily commutable distance of Casey''s Store Support Center in Ankeny, IA and be willing to work onsite 5 days per week.
