Position Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Medical Director, the Lead Provider Intake Medical - Department of Corrections oversees and coordinates medical intake services for individuals entering the correctional care system. This position ensures medical evaluations, screenings, assessments, and treatment needs are addressed efficiently, accurately, and in accordance with Unity Health Care and District of Columbia Department of Corrections policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
The Lead Provider provides direct patient care while serving as a clinical leader for intake medical operations. The position collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams, including Substance Use Disorder (SUD), chronic care, sick call, primary care, mental health, nursing, pharmacy, and correctional staff to promote continuity of care, patient safety, and high-quality healthcare services within a secure correctional environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of primary care, mental health, and substance use conditions.
- Lead and support intake medical staff, including Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, nurses, medical assistants, and support personnel.
- Oversee medical intake screenings, chronic disease assessments, medication reconciliation, and continuity of care.
- Identify urgent or emergent medical needs and ensure appropriate and timely intervention.
- Collaborate with pharmacy, mental health, SUD, chronic care, sick call, primary care, and correctional teams to coordinate patient care.
- Ensure clinical documentation, medical assessments, and workflows comply with Unity Health Care, DC Department of Corrections, NCCHC, ACA, and other applicable standards.
- Promote adherence to facility safety and security requirements within the correctional healthcare environment.
- Review intake operations, clinical trends, and documentation to identify opportunities for quality and process improvement.
- Provide clinical guidance, staff education, and support related to established protocols, policies, and evidence-based practices.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree.
- Advanced Practice Certification; Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) preferred.
- Current and valid professional license to practice in Washington, DC.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in correctional healthcare, emergency medicine, or primary care.
- Prior experience working in intake, chronic care, and sick call departments at Unity Health Care/DC Department of Corrections.
- Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
- Experience in psychiatry, addiction medicine, and primary care with demonstrated ability to assess, diagnose, and treat patients with a variety of health conditions.
- Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and treatment-planning skills.
- Experience working in a fast-paced healthcare environment serving diverse patient populations.
- Strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records, including Centricity EMR systems and CRISP.
- Knowledge of correctional healthcare regulations and accreditation standards, including National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) and American Correctional Association (ACA) standards.
