Duties:
General Summary: Accountability for leading, managing, developing, supervising, and evaluating all aspects of the Materials Management Department which includes: ensures compliance of the departmental policies and procedures; assisting in interviewing, hiring, training, evaluation and disciplining of personnel in the department. Manages and collaborates relationships with Surgical Services leadership members, physicians, for the care of responsible equipment and disposables. Facilitates empowerment of staff in the implementation of creative and innovative materials, delivery models and stimulates a collaborative multidisciplinary team approach in the continuous improvement of patient care services.
People
1. Supervises the methods used to clean, inspect, assembles and packages all surgical products used to support the physicians and nurses in the inpatient and outpatient departments, the Operating Room, Emergency Room, Delivery Room and satellites.
2. Supplies the needs of the Operating Suites and Delivery Rooms by properly maintaining a par inventory in each and the assembly of procedure specific case carts.
3. Without supervision is able to prepare instrument trays and individual items for use by the operating room.
4. Is able to document and monitor steam and gas sterilizers and aerators, prepares mechanically and manually decontaminates all surgical instrumentation.
Service
1. Supervises, counts, disinfects and assembles surgical trays and related supplies for inpatient and outpatient departments, Emergency Room, Operating Room and Delivery Room.
2. Inspects folds, assembles and wraps all surgical supplies and equipment for the Emergency Room, Operating Room and Delivery Room.
3. Assembles case carts, cleans and inspects surgical instruments for damage, workability, cleanliness and completeness.
4. Supervises receiving and stores unsterile and sterile supplies, distributes such supplies to appropriate Operating Rooms maintaining par inventories.
5. Monitors dated sterile supplies and medications to insure that outdated supplies are removed for reprocessing or disposal.
6. Responsible for filling requisitions and running stat requests to the inpatient and outpatient departments, Emergency Room, Operating Room, Delivery Room and satellites.
7. Cleans and inspects pressure transducers for damage, cleanliness and completeness. Responsible for the assembly of procedure specific case carts for the Operating Room and the Delivery Room.
8. Takes inventories of all components of reprocessing trays in an effort to find missing surgical instruments and not returned room a closed surgical case.
9. Performs inventories using the par level method for determining user needs and to revise par levels.
10. Responsible for the scheduling of Materials area staff
11. Has knowledge and skill to:
a. Prepare items for sterilization by double wrapping or placing in heat sealed pouches. Completes necessary sterilization records, monitor aerators and gas and steam sterilizers for proper function. Returns sterile items to ready shelves. Check shelves for outdated items requiring re-sterilization.
b. Transfer instrument trays and basins from the washer/sterilizer conveyer to the next staging area. Spreads sorts and reassembles all instrument trays and single packaged items. Inspects instruments and removes all damaged instruments for repair. Replaces all missing implants, drill bits, blades, k-wires, etc. into orthopedic instrument and implant trays. Verifies instrument counts.
Must frequently prepare tray/trays at a moments notice.
12. Maintains a clean and orderly work environment, participates in quality management teams. Performs all other related duties as required.

2. Assists the M/UD with investigation, action plan and resolution of budgetary variance reporting.

Education:
Education/Experience Required: High School Diploma. Completion of a medical terminology course is helpful. Central Service Certification and one year experience in a Central Service environment. Visual ability is required when inspecting instruments, reading requisitions and instrument checklists. Must be able to work in harmony with other people and under stressful conditions.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions:
Extensive walking and standing is a requirement of this position. Must be able to work in a flexible and changing environment. Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds and push loaded heavy carts for long distances. May be exposed to noisy equipment, aerosols, chemical detergents, needles, blades, sharp instruments, body fluids and tissues, ethylene oxide and its effects, wet floors, steam and a hot and humid environment.
