Associate Attorney

Location: San Francisco, CA

Associate Attorney for a prominent single family office based in San Francisco. Working closely with the General Counsel, this attorney will handle matters spanning commercial agreements, entity governance, trusts and foundations, real estate, tax, and other legal needs. The role offers direct work with family principals, outside counsel, and financial advisors, with no billable-hour targets.

The day-to-day work is weighted toward commercial contracting and entity governance. The attorney will also help guide legal staff and keep projects and document workflows moving.

Responsibilities

  • Draft, review, and negotiate agreements involving professional services, real estate management, construction, art transactions, and confidentiality.
  • Identify contractual, regulatory, and confidentiality risks and work with internal teams and outside counsel to address them.
  • Review entity formation and maintenance documents, including operating agreements, bylaws, consents, and officer certificates.
  • Support trust and private foundation administration, including distribution documents and related compliance work.
  • Conduct legal and tax research and coordinate advice across practice areas.
  • Maintain accurate legal records and oversee entity information and document workflows.
  • Track transactions, deadlines, and deliverables; coordinate with principals, accountants, financial advisors, and outside counsel.
  • Assist in supervising legal staff and improving team processes.

Qualifications

  • Active California Bar license.
  • At least six years of experience in a law firm or in-house legal department, with substantive work in at least two of these areas: corporate or commercial transactions, real estate, trusts and estates, or tax.
  • Strong agreement drafting and negotiation skills, with sound judgment about when to handle a matter independently and when to seek additional guidance.
  • Excellent legal writing, research, communication, and project management skills.
  • Discretion, intellectual curiosity, and a collaborative, service-oriented approach.

Experience with family offices, private wealth or investments, estate planning structures, foundation administration, art transactions, or regulatory compliance is helpful.

Compensation: Target base salary of approximately $225,000, plus 15% bonus potential
