Job Description and Duties

This is a great position if you enjoy being in a secretarial role and are interested in putting your organizational and file management skills to work. The Legal Secretarial staff of the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) consists of a Legal Support Supervisor I, three Legal Secretaries, and one Sr. Legal Typist who work closely as a team to support over fifty attorneys in a professional yet friendly environment. An ideal candidate will have good attendance records, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and enjoy a variety of different projects including calendaring, arranging attorneys travel and reimbursement, case management, SharePoint maintenance, proofreading, editing, and compiling and serving legal documents.

Under general supervision of the Legal Support Supervisor I, this position will perform the full range of complex legal secretarial work and administrative responsibilities to provide support services to the attorneys and staff of the OGC. The incumbent may also assign, direct, and check the work of other support staff on special legal projects.

This position is based in Sacramento and is expected to report to the office four days per week.

The classification is currently subject to Section 5, Hiring-Above-Minimum (HAM) Authorization and to Pay Differential 141. Both are described in the California State Civil Service Pay Scales.

  • Experience proofreading, editing, and/or formatting correspondence and memoranda.
  • Ability to effectively plan and organize work, work under pressure on multiple tasks with short deadlines, and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience performing complex clerical and secretarial work in a professional office setting, preferably as an administrative employee in a legal office.
  • Experience making travel arrangements in a professional setting.
  • Experience calendaring legal proceedings, filings, and/or deadlines.
