Light Equipment Operator - Highway

The Town of Ashland seeks qualified, experienced, and energetic candidates for the position of Light Equipment Operator in the Highway Division within the Department of Public Works.

PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

This position primarily performs work related to construction and maintenance of municipal roadways under the supervision of the Working Foreman.

The following list is descriptive of the position but is not intended to be restrictive or limiting. The position requires the following essential functions:

• Drive or operate vehicles and equipment engaged in construction, maintenance, snow removal, and various other projects and activities.

• Repair and construct streets, sidewalks, signs, fences, drainage infrastructure.

• Works with small/light engine operated equipment as well as hand tools.

• Service and follow preventative maintenance on equipment or vehicles being operated such as checking oil, water and battery levels, tire pressure, etc.

• Assist other departments as needed.

• Performs all other duties as assigned by the Working Foreman.

This position is required to be available for all snow operations and any other emergencies during or outside regular work hours.

SALARY RANGE

Grade H03 $23.8988/hr. - $26.2244/hr, DOQ

*Full range for H03 is ($23.8988/hr – $32.0142/hr)

**Upon successful completion of probation and the required licensing listed below, the range can move to Grade H04 $25.6563/hr - $34.1864/hr.

Additional opportunities for growth may exist if the candidate already has licensing, or upon receipt of licensing, which may allow the candidate to move into grade H04, which starts at $25.6563/hr. (The full range of H04 is $25.6563/hr - $34.1864/hr.)

ATTRIBUTES AND QUALIFICATIONS

The Light Equipment Operator position requires a High School degree or equivalent plus a minimum knowledge of basic construction practices. Additionally, candidates must be able to:

• Follow directions on projects

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates, coworkers, and the general public.

• Communicate effectively, confirming understanding if direction is given.

• Understand and properly operate tools and equipment.

• Understand and follow all safety procedures related to job responsibilities.

Candidates must be able to obtain:

• Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B permit within 6 months of employment, and full license within 1 year, at which time you will be promoted to Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO). Must apply for the permit for the Massachusetts CDL within 30 days of hire date.

• Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer with a 2A, 1C endorsement within (6) months of employment.

The Light Equipment Operator is a full-time, 40 hour/week, non-exempt position represented by the DPW Union. Salary is based on the chart in the collective bargaining agreement.
