    Lighting Specialist II

    Location: Birmingham, AL/ Mobile, AL

    License Requirement:Journeyman Electrician License – State of Alabama (Required)
    Contract- 3 Years

    Client- Alabama Power.

    Mandatory Requirement

    This position requires the candidate to hold an active Journeyman Electrician License and be certified in the State of Alabama.

    Position Summary

    The Lighting Specialist II is responsible for evaluating, designing, and supporting NEC-compliant lighting solutions for residential, commercial, industrial, athletic field, and interstate lighting projects. This role partners closely with sales teams, engineers, vendors, contractors, and utility stakeholders to deliver safe, efficient, and cost-effective lighting designs from concept through construction.

    The ideal candidate has strong expertise in lighting design, NEC code compliance, photometrics, and electrical calculations, along with hands-on field experience and the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.

    Key Responsibilities

    Internal Partner & Vendor Collaboration

    • Collaborate with Lighting Services Sales, Lighting Construction Coordinators, NESC engineers, APC Power Delivery partners, ALDOT, outside engineering firms, architects, lighting vendors, and contractors

    • Support development of pricing estimates, design prints, and material lists following successful sales

    Lighting Design & Engineering

    • Create customized lighting plans that meet aesthetic and functional requirements based on photometric layouts

    • Design NEC-compliant electrical service for lighting installations

    • Perform voltage drop calculations, wire sizing, breaker/fuse loading in accordance with NEC requirements

    • Work under the direction of APC Master Electricians as required

    Product Selection & Technology

    • Partner with Sales and vendors to recommend and specify lighting fixtures, lamps, controls, and smart lighting systems

    • Stay current on lighting technologies, controls, automation, and industry trends

    • Evaluate and recommend new lighting products for project use

    Compliance, Documentation & Budget

    • Ensure lighting designs comply with NEC, energy codes, safety standards, and accessibility requirements

    • Develop cost estimates and work within budget constraints

    • Create detailed lighting plans, technical drawings, specifications, and documentation for construction and installation

    Site Visits & Field Support

    • Conduct on-site evaluations for new installations, retrofits, or renovations

    • Assess existing lighting conditions and gather field data

    • Collaborate with electrical engineers, contractors, and installers to ensure smooth implementation

    Required Qualifications

    • Journeyman Electrician License – State of Alabama (Required)

    • Experience in lighting design and implementation (residential, commercial, industrial, athletic field, or roadway lighting)

    • Comprehensive knowledge of the NEC code book

    • Strong understanding of lighting principles, photometrics, and electrical calculations

    • Ability to perform voltage drop, conductor sizing, and circuit protection calculations

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

    • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects

    • High attention to detail and commitment to quality

    • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with interstate or roadway lighting

    • Familiarity with smart lighting systems, automation, and controls

    • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, or similar design tools

    • Experience working in a utility or power delivery environment

    Work Environment

    • Combination of office, field, and site visits

    • Frequent collaboration with engineers, contractors, vendors, and utility partners

    • Emphasis on safety, compliance, and design accuracy.
