Maintenance Manager

We are seeking a Maintenance Manager on behalf of our client, a leader in steel mill services providing scrap yard management, product handling, melt shop, and logistics support to steel producers. You’ll own maintenance and reliability for the site’s heavy mobile equipment, fixed plant assets and locomotives, leading a crew of mechanics.

This is a high-impact role for a hands-on leader who wants to take ownership and improve the site. You’ll bring structure to work orders, diagnostics, project delegation and cost control.

This role is based in Burns Harbor, Indiana

Responsibilities

Equipment & Maintenance Oversight:

• Manage all maintenance for a diesel-powered heavy mobile equipment fleet (such as loaders, material handlers, haul trucks, excavators and hydraulic scrap-handling equipment), electrically driven fixed assets (boring mill, grinder, shredder), and locomotives.
• Develop and execute preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
• Coordinate major repairs, rebuilds and outside vendor work.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records, service logs and equipment history.

Team Leadership:

• Lead approximately 15 mechanics through two maintenance supervisors on day and afternoon shifts, and partner with the General Manager.
• Delegate work, line up work orders and require job procedures for each task.
• Train and develop team members on equipment, troubleshooting and safety, and take part in hiring.
• Enforce accountability, productivity and quality standards.

Operations Support & Cost Control:

• Work closely with operations (foremen, operators, scale house) to align maintenance with production needs.
• Manage the maintenance P&L, plan spend, flag projects trending over budget, and phase work where it makes sense.
• Manage parts inventory, ordering and vendor relationships.
• Track and report efficiency metrics (downtime, cost per hour, PM compliance, etc.) and recommend equipment improvements or replacements.

Qualifications and Experience

• 5+ years of maintenance experience with heavy mobile equipment (diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems).
• Demonstrated experience managing a maintenance crew of similar size, with accountability for cost, efficiency, time and people. First-line supervisory experience alone is not enough.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills. A driven, ownership-minded leader who is comfortable in a blue-collar environment.
• Schedule: typically 6:30 AM to 3:30–4:00 PM on a 24-hour rotating-shift operation, with occasional after-hours emergency calls. Minimal travel.
