Description

Under the supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor, performs manual and skilled work of higher difficulty in the maintenance and repair of city-owned property and facilities. Incumbent utilizes skills in one or more trades/craft areas at the journeyman level. Work assignments are given verbally with some written assignments and are reviewed upon completion of tasks by supervisor. Performs other work as required.

Examples of Duties

  • Performs a variety of maintenance tasks, including all aspects of plumbing and building maintenance.
  • Performs a variety of construction tasks, including carpentry, plumbing, concrete and block work, drywall, painting, roofing, fencing, general construction, etc.
  • Inspects and repairs backflow devices for all City buildings.
  • Estimates materials needed for jobs, get quotes for materials, write estimates, and pick up materials.
  • Operates all types of divisional vehicles and various equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate or GED. (Proof of education must be uploaded with application).
  • Five (5) years maintenance and repair experience with a variety of construction trades.

Licenses, Certifications or Registrations:

  • FWPCOA Backflow Prevention Assembly Maintenance and Repair Specialist License
  • FPCOA Backflow Prevention Assembly Testing Certificate
  • Must possess a valid Florida Class "B" commercial driver's license with air brakes. Applicants who possess a valid out of state Class "B" commercial driver's license with air brakes must obtain the Florida Class "B" commercial driver's license with air brakes within 10 days of employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrable skill and knowledge in a wide variety of maintenance disciplines.
  • Demonstrable ability to read and interpret working drawings, blueprints, schematics and written instruction.
  • Demonstrable ability to layout a maintenance/repair projects that includes preparation and completion in an efficient and productive fashion.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of power hand tools as well as standard workshop equipment.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Basic English, spelling and arithmetic.
  • Ability to maintain records and to prepare reports from such records.
  • Ability to understand and communicate the policies, procedures, and services of the department, division or program.
  • Demonstrable ability to operate a variety of modern floor mounted and handheld power tools. This equipment includes, but is not limited to, bucket trucks, power hand saws, table saws, electrical test equipment, vacuum gauges, leak detectors, air compressors, and pneumatic hand tools.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with team members, other City employees and the general public.
  • Demonstrable skill working safely with neatness, accuracy and speed.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to work at heights of up to 55 feet.
  • Ability to climb up and down ladders or stairs while carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to identify colors.
  • Ability to Drive and operate City vehicles in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions including heat, humidity, rain and cold; work around unpleasant conditions such as fumes and odors; work around excessive noise for long periods of time not to exceed eight hours consecutively; and work around dirt and dust. Such conditions may occasionally be determined as unsanitary and hazardous.
  • Ability to hear and comprehend conversation spoken at various levels and rates of speed.
  • Ability to see, read, and comprehend written communication of all sizes.
  • Ability to print and use cursive writing; write or draw letters, words, characters or symbols.
  • Ability to learn and remember simple and complex tasks and perform job requirements with limited direction.
  • Ability to walk, stand, or sit for periods of more than 30 minutes, but not for more than 8 consecutive hours.
  • Ability to walk continuously for more than 10 minutes at one time.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push or pull items which weigh up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to carry items for long distances not to exceed 300 yards.
  • Ability to lift or carry items which may be considered unwieldy and awkward to grasp.
  • Ability to hold items which weigh up to 10 lbs. for a period of time not to exceed 10 minutes.
  • Ability to push or pull items for distances not to exceed 20 feet, such distances may be level, inclining or declining.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, or squat, and move sideways while doing so, for periods of up to 10 minutes throughout the working day.
  • Ability to work in small, enclosed, or partially enclosed areas.
  • Requires the use of certain chemicals and chemical processes.
  • May be required to work during a declared emergency.
