JOB SUMMARY
The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for leading and supervising maintenance personnel to ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of equipment throughout Plain Dealing Lumber's sawmill and planer mill operations. This position directs preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities, coordinates daily work assignments, supports troubleshooting efforts, and ensures maintenance work is completed safely, on schedule, and in compliance with company policies and safety standards. The Maintenance Supervisor partners with Operations, the Maintenance Planner, and Reliability teams to maximize equipment uptime, improve maintenance performance, develop employees, and drive continuous improvement initiatives that support production and operational excellence.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
•Supervise and direct the daily work of maintenance technicians, electricians, and millwrights; assign work orders, set daily priorities, and ensure all tasks are completed safely, correctly, and on schedule.
•Lead the facility’s preventive maintenance program; ensure PM tasks are completed on schedule, documented accurately, and that findings are communicated to the Maintenance Manager.
•Respond to equipment breakdowns and production emergencies; troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic failures and direct the maintenance team to resolution with minimum production downtime.
•Review and manage the work order backlog in coordination with the Maintenance Manager; ensure high-priority and safety-related work orders are addressed first.
•Perform hands-on maintenance work alongside the team as required, including mechanical repairs, equipment adjustments, and troubleshooting across sawmill and planer mill systems.
•Ensure all maintenance work complies with OSHA safety standards, LOTO/lockout-tagout procedures, and PDL safety policies; enforce safety compliance within the maintenance department without exception.
•Coordinate with production supervisors and the Sawmill Supervisor to schedule maintenance windows, planned outages, and equipment shutdowns that minimize production impact.
•Maintain accurate maintenance records including completed work orders, equipment history, PM completion logs, and parts usage in the CMMS or maintenance tracking system.
•Supervise and support the Inventory Control Specialist in maintaining adequate maintenance parts and critical spares inventory; communicate parts needs and anticipated demand to the Purchaser.
•Conduct daily and weekly department meetings with the maintenance team to communicate priorities, safety topics, and performance expectations.
•Immediately report all safety incidents, near-misses, and equipment failures to the Maintenance Manager; participate in root cause analysis and corrective action development.
•Perform other duties as assigned by the Maintenance Manager.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
•High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s degree or technical diploma in Industrial Maintenance, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred.
•Minimum 5–7 years of industrial maintenance experience in a sawmill, lumber, paper mill, or heavy manufacturing environment required.
•Minimum 2–3 years in a supervisory or lead maintenance role with direct responsibility for other technicians required.
•Strong working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems in an industrial production environment.
•Solid understanding of OSHA safety requirements and LOTO/lockout-tagout procedures; ability to enforce safety compliance consistently across the department.
•Experience with preventive maintenance programs and CMMS or maintenance management systems.
•Ability to respond to after-hours breakdowns and production emergencies; on-call availability is a requirement of this role.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
•Experience in a sawmill, planer mill, or wood products manufacturing environment is a strong plus.
•Journeyman Electrician or Millwright certification, or equivalent technical training.
•Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills a plus.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position is performed throughout the facility including the sawmill, planer mill, maintenance shop, mechanical rooms, and yard areas. The incumbent must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, climb ladders and elevated platforms, bend, reach, kneel, and lift up to 60 lbs. The role involves regular exposure to noise, sawdust, lubricants, heat, and moving machinery. Required PPE including hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toed boots, and high-visibility vest must be worn at all times in production and yard areas.
