Description

This is an entry-level, skilled, full-time, non-exempt position under the direct supervision of the Streets Crew Leader or Street Supervisor. This employee performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks assisting in the repair, and maintenance of public buildings, and public works facilities. He or she also assists in the repair and maintenance of streets and City right of way. This position is required to be on call periodically throughout the year.

Examples of Duties

  • Resurfaces, repairs or patches roadways with hot asphalt or "cold patch".
  • Repairs and install new concrete sidewalks and curbs.
  • Paints traffic markings on streets, crosswalks, parking lots, and curbs.
  • Removes ice and snow from public roadways, sidewalks, and City parking lots.
  • Mows grass using zero turn mowers and trim shrubs, trees etc.
  • Removes litter and debris from roadways curbs, shoulders, medians, sidewalks, and other City rights-of-way; Picks up and disposes of resident bagged curbside yard clippings and waste.
  • Operates specialized vehicles and a variety of light, medium and heavy equipment related to the maintenance and repair of the City's Street system.
  • Performs minor carpentry, heating, plumbing or electrical work to City facilities. Performs minor servicing to truck and reports mechanical or other problems
  • Keeps truck stocked with supplies and materials.
  • Answers emergency calls from the public and other agencies taking appropriate action such as placing barricades, removing fallen trees and limbs, emergency patching of streets, etc.
  • Participates in water system maintenance and repair work; locates, excavates and repairs water lines and related facilities; inspects water projects for leaks, decayed pipes, spillages and pump malfunctioning.
  • Maintains public facilities, shop and garage areas, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment at the close of the workday; Installs barricades and routes traffic in a safe manner.
  • Provides courteous customer service responding to questions and inquiries from the general public.
  • Responds to customer problems or issues and facility repair.
  • Contacts the public to inform them of activities and shutdowns and explains applicable rules and regulations.
  • Removes weeds and debris from public buildings street easements, and other grounds.
  • May operate a jackhammer; pours and finishes concrete and blacktop.
  • May participate in training new employees in work practices and in how to apply policies, procedures, and standards to specific situations.
  • Maintains records of basic operations, maintenance and work performed.
  • Preforms occasional general custodial work in public buildings.
  • Assists in the set up and breakdown of special events.
  • Required to be on call every five weeks.
  • Preforms other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Requires a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Ability to obtain a class B CDL with the appropriate endorsements within 1 year of employment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Employee may be required to operate light, medium, and heavy equipment vehicles, and other equipment.
  • Constant exposure to all weather conditions (sometimes severe).
  • Walking on uneven surfaces, bending, kneeling, squatting, twisting.
  • Exposure to airborne dust and loud noises.
  • Frequent climbing of ladders up to 12' above ground.
  • Driving and working on slippery surfaces.
  • Working with toxic substances.
  • Occasional lifting of items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in confined and cramped spaces.
  • Ability to use repetitive hand motion, lift above shoulders climb in and out of ditches, turn valves, lift and carry pipes and dig ditches.
  • Continuous standing, frequent walking, bending and stooping, reaching, pushing and pulling, and twisting of wrist in use of tools.
  • Occasional sitting, squatting, crawling, climbing and balancing.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS

Vision must be sufficient to read computer screens, printed documents, and to operate vehicles and equipment. Employee must hear in the normal audio range, with or without correction.

Employees earn one day of sick leave each month, which is immediately accessible. You will also earn 2 weeks of vacation during your first year of employment, one of which you can access after a 6-month introductory period, the remaining vacation is accrued monthly.
