Position Summary:
Responsible for planning, implementing, supervising and evaluating day-to-day operations of the mechanical
circulatory support program in the critical care setting with a focus on maintaining the ECMO program in
accordance with accreditation requirements as defined by the ELSO. Works in collaboration with multi-
disciplinary team to ensure on-going clinical education and competencies of the ECMO team. Works with the
HLVI Data Management team to complete the registry requirements.
Provides overall supervision of Registered Nurses and Respiratory Therapist who deliver care within areas of responsibility. Responsible for recruitment and retention, performance review, and professional development; involved in the budget formulation process and quality outcomes; and helps to plan for, organize, and lead the delivery of care for a designated patient care area. A leader that communicates organizational vision and values and asks for the involvement of the work group to achieve target performance in quality, safety, service, efficiency and effectiveness

Service
Ensures ongoing staff competence with program related training and proficiencies
a. Plans and implements ongoing education opportunities for all members of the clinical team.
b. Identify and revise clinical competencies as appropriate.
c. Organize education and ongoing simulation exercises to maintain clinical proficiency of bedside medical team (or as requested by the medical team).
d. Identifies off site education opportunities and makes recommendations to the HLVI administration and medical leadership team.
Functions as a competent member of the advanced HF team with a focus on mechanical circulatory support
a. Participates in HF rounds as appropriate.
b. Maintains working relationship with HF program leaders and clinical team.
c. Provides support to HF Medical Director and Coordinator.
Supports the coordination of patient care
a. Attends ECMO rounds daily as appropriate.
b. Works with team to identify patients appropriate for transfer into or out of the facility.
c. Monitors clinical criteria to assist in decisions regarding appropriate use of mechanical circulatory support.
d. Serves as a liaison between clinical staff and patient and families.
Efficiency and Effectiveness
Maintains clinical skills by working in the clinical setting on an ongoing basis

c. Identifies own education needs and pursues opportunities to complete CEUs.

Supervise the training of technical staff in ECMO use
a. Organizes technical training on ECMO system.
b. Ensures processes are in place for system problem resolution.
c. Works collaboratively with perfusion team to identify technical learning needs as they relate to the ECMO system.
Ability to manage expenses to established budget and staffing plan
a. Prepares annual operating and capital expense needs.

c. Reviews expense variances and develops an appropriate plan to meet the budget.
d. Educates the patient care team members on financial implications of patient care decisions.

Maintains current policies and procedures including the indications and contraindications for ECMO
a. Develops policies and procedures as indicated.
b. Works with medical staff leaders to identify and document appropriate use criteria for placing patients on ECMO.
c. Participates when appropriate in decisions or discussions about appropriate patient selection.
d. Educates the clinical team on appropriate indications and contraindications for placing patients on ECMO.
Oversees the development, growth and operations of the ECMO program.
a. Participates in decision making process with HLVI administration and medical staff.
b. Identifies program growth opportunities and develops plan for implementation.
c. Serves as liaison to the regional facilities.
d. Evaluates staffing needs of program and works with multi-disciplinary leaders to ensure adequate resources to provide patient care and oversite of technical systems.
e. Participates in equipment selection and supply evaluations.
f. Monitors documentation to ensure most appropriate coding and billing of cases.
g. Provide education as needed to the coding and billing teams.
h. Works with Decision Support to track and monitor finances of the program.
