Description
Tesla is seeking a Managing Counsel, Intellectual Property to support the growth of its expanding global innovations. Reporting to the Senior Director, Commercial Legal, this role provides strategic IP legal support to engineering and business teams. The position can be based in the Bay Area, California, Austin, Texas, or in the Washington, DC area,. and offers the opportunity to deliver proactive counsel in a fast-paced environment.
Provide advice on a wide variety of intellectual property topics for engineering and business teams, including assessment of patent and trademark assets and implications for business outcomes
Support the business in connection with transactions involving material IP aspects, including strategic acquisitions and IP collaboration and pooling arrangements
Research and assess patent and licensing demand requests in collaboration with engineering, business, and legal teams
Create and maintain IP-related forms, playbooks, and training materials to address common IP concerns
Provide support and strategic guidance to business leadership regarding the company's patent portfolio and IP matters
Review and assess questions and concerns related to open-source software
Liaise with colleagues in APAC and EMEA to ensure consistency of strategy and risk allocation across the global business
Juris Doctor degree and licensed to practice in one or more US jurisdictions
Minimum of 15 years of practice experience at a well-regarded law firm and/or company
Experience structuring and leading negotiation of intellectual property transactions across technology areas, including physical goods and software licenses, as well as exposure to prosecuting and enforcing IP rights
Ability to proactively identify problems, drive projects, make complex cost/benefit assessments, and deliver creative legal and business solutions
Demonstrated capacity to work autonomously and collaboratively while managing competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to earn colleague confidence and communicate effectively at all organizational levels
High standards, impeccable integrity and ethics, strong judgment, and superior analytical, oral, and written communication skills
