Manufacturing Process Engineer II
Location: Portland, Oregon
Pay Rate: $40–$47/hour
Engagement: W2 Contract
Duration: 2 years
Position Overview
We are seeking a Manufacturing Process Engineer II to support a confidential automotive manufacturing initiative involving the design, construction, and industrialization of a new truck manufacturing plant in the United States.
This is a hands-on technical engineering role focused on routing, clipping/retention, and 2D/3D layout planning, with a primary emphasis on low-voltage (LV) battery cables and LV power distribution/powernet. The engineer will also provide secondary support for LV harness routing, fluid routing, and other vehicle lines.
The ideal candidate will bring automotive engineering experience, strong routing and retention knowledge, AutoCAD capability, and experience supporting manufacturing builds and resolving fit or process issues.
Key Responsibilities
- Create, develop, and maintain 2D/3D layouts for assigned vehicle routing content.
- Develop routing layouts considering packaging constraints, interfaces, installation requirements, manufacturability, and serviceability.
- Produce release-quality layouts and markups for design reviews and downstream execution.
- Incorporate approved design changes and maintain clear layout revisions.
LV Battery Cable & Powernet Routing
- Develop and validate routing paths for LV battery cables and LV power distribution/powernet.
- Evaluate routing for:
- Bend radius
- Packaging clearances
- Thermal/heat exposure
- Abrasion and chafe prevention
- Water exposure
- Service accessibility
- Develop alternate routing concepts and trade studies when packaging conflicts arise.
- Define and validate clipping and retention strategies, including clip locations, spacing, orientation, and protection requirements.
- Recommend protection methods such as sleeving, convolute, tape, edge protection, and grommets.
- Coordinate with bracket and fastener owners to ensure appropriate mounting provisions.
Harness, Fluid & Cross-System Routing
- Provide technical routing and retention support for LV harnesses, hoses, tubes, coolant/air lines, and other assigned routing systems.
- Evaluate clearance, thermal exposure, dynamic movement, abrasion protection, drain paths, service access, and assembly sequence.
- Identify opportunities to standardize clips, brackets, and retention features to improve manufacturability and reduce complexity.
- Support development of clip maps and retention concepts.
Manufacturing & Build Readiness
- Evaluate installation sequence, operator ergonomics, tool access, assembly feasibility, and error-proofing opportunities.
- Identify manufacturing risks including misrouting, excessive installation force, potential rework, and interference issues.
- Work cross-functionally with vehicle packaging, body, chassis, interior, thermal, electrical architecture, grounding, and manufacturing engineering teams.
- Support prototype, PRS, and other build events as required.
- Troubleshoot routing and clipping issues across electrical and fluid systems.
- Document issues, suspected root causes, containment actions, corrective recommendations, and verification status.
- Update layouts and engineering documentation following approved changes.
PFMEA & Documentation
- Provide technical engineering input for PFMEA activities related to routing and retention.
- Evaluate manufacturing failure modes such as chafing, clip disengagement, misbuilds, kinking, leaks, service damage, corrosion, and water exposure.
- Recommend practical prevention and detection controls.
- Maintain engineering documentation including:
- Layouts and routing evidence
- Clip/retention strategy summaries
- Interference and open-issue lists
- Validation status
- Build issue logs
- Work instruction/visual aid inputs
- Weekly technical status updates
Required Qualifications
- Automotive engineering experience with hands-on routing and clipping/retention experience.
- Strong AutoCAD capability, including 2D layouts, markups, and release-quality documentation.
- Experience supporting automotive or manufacturing build events and resolving fit, routing, or process issues.
- Understanding of manufacturing and assembly feasibility.
- Ability to collaborate across engineering disciplines and clearly document technical decisions and rationale.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of LV battery cables, LV power distribution, and/or powernet systems.
- Experience with LV harness routing and fluid line routing.
- Experience with 3D CAD/modeling systems, particularly NX; equivalent CAD applications are also acceptable.
- Experience with routing protection, clips, brackets, fasteners, and other retention strategies.
- Experience supporting PFMEA activities in an automotive manufacturing environment.
Additional Information
- This is a two-year contract engagement.
- The selected contractor will work under the direction of the Project Lead or designated Engineering Manager and support technical work-package and product-project leads.
- Work location and required travel to plant, supplier, or build locations will be established at engagement kickoff.
- Due to the confidential nature of the program, the selected individual must execute an NDA before receiving non-public project information or system access.
- This position is focused on technical engineering execution and does not have ownership of overall program schedules, budgets, commercial supplier negotiations, or final design release authority unless specifically delegated.
