The Role

The Manufacturing Software Test Engineer (MSTE) is responsible for developing and executing the strategy for production test systems across vehicle assembly plants and supporting facilities to ensure electrical quality and defect prevention. This role oversees test system integrity, optimizes tester placement and coverage using the Electrical Bill of Operations (BoO), Manufacturing Requirements, and established best practices, and proactively identifies and resolves testing and program risks. By collaborating with cross-functional teams and leveraging data-driven decision-making, the MSTE helps improve Electrical First-Time Quality (E-FTQ), enhance manufacturing efficiency and throughput, and support GM's commitment to delivering safe, high-quality, defect-free vehicles. This position is primarily first shift with occasional off-shift support as needed.

 

What You'll Do

As a Manufacturing Software Test Engineer (MSTE), you will lead the strategy, implementation, and continuous improvement of Production Test Systems across vehicle assembly operations. Working closely with Manufacturing, Quality, Engineering, IT, Maintenance, and supplier partners, you will ensure testing systems are reliable, effective, and aligned with quality and production objectives.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and manage Production Test System strategies to support vehicle quality, defect prevention, and Electrical First-Time Quality (E-FTQ) goals.
• Ensure test systems are production-ready, validated, and optimized for new vehicle launch and steady-state manufacturing operations.
• Partner with cross-functional teams to resolve test-related issues and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
• Oversee test software changes, test content governance, and compliance with manufacturing and quality requirements while working closely with the Vehicle Engineering Teams
• Analyze test data to identify trends, improve test effectiveness, reduce false failures, and enhance operational performance.
• Lead root cause investigations and corrective actions related to test system and vehicle quality concerns.
• Support training, standardization, and best practices for plant teams and stakeholders.
• Communicate tester performance, quality metrics, risks, and improvement opportunities to leadership and key partners.
• Promote safe, compliant, and ergonomic testing processes and equipment across manufacturing operations.

Your Skills & Abilities

• Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, diagnostic information, and vehicle systems documentation (i.e., service information)
• Ability to debug and troubleshoot code(similar to Python/C++/Visual basic)
• Experience with, or a demonstrated interest in, automotive systems and vehicle technologies.
• Strong interpersonal skills with a proven ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical information to diverse audiences.
• Self-motivated and proactive, with a continuous improvement mindset.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and technical problem-solving skills.
• Ability to make sound decisions in a fast-paced manufacturing environment while managing multiple priorities.

 

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge

• Three (3) or more years of experience working with automotive electrical systems, diagnostics, or related technologies.
• ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Certification preferred.
• Working knowledge of General Motors Manufacturing System (GMS) principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
• Experience using GM diagnostic tools and systems, including TPM, MDI, and Service Information (SI).
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Engineering Technology, Automotive Technology or a related technical field; equivalent experience will also be considered.
• Experience supporting manufacturing, quality, testing, or vehicle launch activities within an automotive environment.
• Experience with end-of-line test, flash, static, AVT, MERS, JIRA, SPPS or DVT-related manufacturing software test processes.
