Port NOLA seeks a Marine Dredge Captain. This role supports and supervises dredge operations to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant performance of all activities related to vessel operation, maintenance, and personnel oversight. The position supervises dredge deckhands and operators, directs daily operations aboard the dredge and support vessels, and performs hands-on tasks involving mooring, anchor handling, equipment operation, routine maintenance, and material handling.

The incumbent provides training on dredge operation, towing procedures, and deckhand skills, and manages gangway operations to ensure safe crew movement. They carry out full supervisory responsibilities including scheduling, performance evaluations, employee training, discipline, and leave approval, especially when acting in place of the Senior Dredge Captain.

The role enforces all safety policies, conducts inspections, monitors work for hazards, and promotes a strong safety culture. Additionally, the incumbent performs other assigned tasks to support Port operations and serves as an essential emergency employee, remaining available to respond to urgent issues across Port facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a U.S. Coast Guard Master of 100T License with towing endorsement; OR

Possession of a U.S. Coast Guard Engineer's License with at least Designated Duty Engineer authority; OR

Four years of experience in dredging operations at the supervisory level or above.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:

Every three years of experience in general dredging operations will be credited as one year of supervisory-level dredging experience toward the required four years of supervisory-level experience. The maximum substitution allowed is three years of supervisory-level experience.

NOTE:

The hiring agency will ensure compliance with all applicable U.S. Coast Guard regulations.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Leads and supervises daily dredge operations, including vessel positioning, deck activities, equipment handling, routine maintenance, and all dredge crew functions in support of safe, efficient operations.

  • Provides training, oversight, and performance management for dredge personnel, including operation of the hydraulic cutter head dredge, towing vessels, and general deckhand skills.

  • Enforces safety, compliance, and emergency readiness, fostering a strong safety culture, conducting inspections, addressing hazards, and serving as an essential employee during emergencies and disaster response.

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: Probational, Promotional, or Job Appointment

Career Progression: This position may be filled as a Marine Dredge Captain.

Compensation: This position is eligible for premium pay of up to $1.50 per hour. (For each hour actually worked)

Work Schedule: The position currently consists of working forty (40) hour work week with overtime as necessary. This is not a live on Dredge. All employees return home each day.
