The Meat Manager reports to the Store Manager and works closely with the Regional Directors and company ownership. This position is responsible for the overall performance of the department, including team leadership, customer service, product quality, merchandising, purchasing, inventory control, labor management, regulatory compliance, and profitability.

We are looking for a leader who works alongside the team, sets clear expectations, and holds employees accountable. The successful candidate will be encouraged to operate the Meat Department with an ownership mindset while following McKinnon's policies, procedures, and company standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, supervise, train, and develop Meat Department associates.
  • Participate in hiring, performance management, disciplinary action, and terminations in coordination with the Store Manager.
  • Schedule and assign work to ensure proper department coverage and productivity.
  • Maintain a fresh, full, clean, and attractive meat case throughout the day.
  • Provide knowledgeable, friendly service and respond to customer questions and special requests.
  • Monitor product quality, freshness, rotation, pricing, and proper labeling.
  • Manage department sales, gross profit, labor, packaging expenses, shrink, and inventory.
  • Order meat and supplies while maintaining appropriate inventory levels.
  • Create effective merchandising displays and support company promotions and weekly advertisements.
  • Ensure all department equipment is used safely and properly maintained.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary work environment.
  • Ensure compliance with all food-safety regulations, sanitation requirements, and McKinnon's policies and procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with store leadership, associates, vendors, and other department managers.
  • Perform the duties of Meat Department associates as needed.
  • Complete special projects and other responsibilities assigned by store leadership.

Qualifications

  • At least two years of relevant experience as a Meat Department Manager, Assistant Meat Manager, Meat Cutter, or equivalent industry position.
  • Experience supervising and directing a team of five or more employees is strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of retail meat-cutting procedures, products, merchandising, ordering, inventory, food safety, and sanitation.
  • Demonstrated ability to train, motivate, and hold employees accountable.
  • Strong customer-service and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and leadership abilities.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with the Store Manager, Assistant Store Manager, department managers, and associates.
  • Ability to understand and follow all relevant McKinnon's Market & Super Butcher Shop policies and standards.
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as business needs require.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work shifts of up to 8-10 hours.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, including up to four hours without a break.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, grasp objects, and safely climb ladders.
  • Ability to lift and carry loads weighing up to 60 pounds without assistance.
  • Ability to push and pull carts weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to work in refrigerated areas and environments with varying temperatures.
  • Ability to safely operate knives, saws, grinders, slicers, wrapping equipment, and other Meat Department tools and equipment.
